I know, it's from the late 1980s, but I just finally saw the entire thing in order. I've seen sections of it on TV over the years, but never the entire mini series from the start.

It's an interesting story, but kind of depressing. Just about everyone in it dies.

But definitely in novels written by Larry McMurtry, an American treasure, such as Lonesome Dove.

Lonesome Dove is one of my favorite movies. In my opinion it rates right up there with John Wayne. Can't believe I said that. Don

Now that you've seen it-go get and read the book-really a GREAT read. Also there are tree others in the series-you need to read them too. Let's see-comanche Moon is one but can't remember the other two. All I do know is that Deadman's Walk and Commanche Moon in that order were prequels to LD and the last was a sequel, Streets of Laredo. The sequel was way depressing. I thought that Commanche Moon was the best (besides Lonesome dove). Really great reads though and I highly reccomend.
I can't believe that the miniseries came out back in the 80's  I'm getting old

"It ain't dying I'm talking about, it's LIVING!"

"Agustus McCrae"

(Maybe paraphrased, but the gist of it.)

I believe the book won the Pulitzer Prize when first published. It is, as Caje says, a wonderful read. I believe the other, related books were written later, including at least one with a co-author. Lonesome Dove, I think, is the best by far of the series. (Kinda like the TV shows/movies, huh?!)

But I did read, and watch, the prequels and the sequels, and though they were not the original book's equal, they were entertaining.

I suppose that would have to be my all time favorite movie...seen it a dozen times and still enjoy it. Open Range is a close second though.

Whoever did the casting in this movie did an outstanding job. All the characters are memorable. Especially Blue Duck. The butt whuppin' Woodrow puts on that Army scout is one of the most vicious I've seen in a movie.

Just like Willie Nelson, my heroes have always been cowboys. I grew up dreamin' of bein' a cowboy and learnin' the cowboy ways. Lovin' the life of my high ridin' heroes I burned up my child hood days.....

The Lonesome Dove books/movies are my absolute favorite. I have all the books and all the movies. But I'll have to admit that when I read the first book and saw the first movie it cured me forever and all time of wanting to be a cowboy. Made me hit my knees and thank God for puttin' me into this world in the 20th century in the big city.

Maybe the best movie of all time (in my opinion). It was based on a true story. My favorite line, "I always wanted to shoot at a educated man".

Lonesome Dove is pretty much the apex of the mini-series genre. Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duvall at the top of their game, interacting like an old married couple. True, most everyone dies but in that era, doing those types of activities, I imagine the deaths could come fast and furious.

The books are good reads but I thought all of the other movies were junk.

Yep, watched it on DirectTV
