Long Distance

Quoted from MostlyHamless:
Or better yet, bring your 15-22 out to your nearest Appleseed shoot. You will be amazed at what you will learn to do with it- all this stuff and more.

I went to a one day Appleseed shoot this past weekend, more out of curiosity than thinking I was going to learn something. My curiosity was satisfied and low and behold, this old fart learnt quite a bit about shooting a rifle. I am here and now challenging all who read this to find the next Appleseed event near you and go so you can learn and know your rifle like only real riflemen know their rifles. I will be returning to one or two to earn my Rifleman Patch. And I'll be doing a lot of shooting, practicing so I can get that patch.

So for us unfortunate few on the other side of the pond who will probably never get to attend an Appleseed, please let us know a few fundamentals that they taught you regarding the 15-22 :)

Why in the world would you even consider making your Range a Garbage Pit? This stuff does NOT just biodegrade, dry up, and go away over night.....stupid is as stupid does....

We have several ranges at our club, all but one remains pristine. It's the Plinking range. Other than glass, you can bring whatever you want to shoot at. It's the most popular range at the Club.

You're right, it doesn't clean itself up. That's what range cleanup days are all about. Though any type of food like watermelon or whatever will be gone by next morning. Lots of hungry critters in the woods.

By your remarks, it doesn't sounds like you have a fun place to shoot.

We all should have a 200 yard range in our back yard.

We could, 'cept people seem to like to live in cities.

If you divide the 2.4 billions acres of the continental US by 300 Milllion people, it works out to about 8 acres per person or 24 acres for a 3 person family unit.

You can easily get a 200 yard range in 8 acres.

With my luck, my "range" would be in the middle of a swamp, on the side of a mountain, in a lake or the desert, though.

Easy there, friend. The name calling is uncalled for.

Yea, most of the stuff does degrade in rain, animals clear off what doesn't or you can simply clean up after yourself. Been doing this for a long time with no problems. If this offends your sensibilities, limit yourself to bars of soap.

Well first I doubt he has truck loads of fruits coming in. Second, half a dozen old apples will get cleaned of by deer or other animals within a day or two. Third, a bunch of old fruit doesn't equal a garbage dump. Now, if they are taking old computers, rotors, refrigerators, tvs, furniture. ....etc... then yea that's a dump

You want to really have fun? If you are able to do it try shooting tracers from 100-125yds at dusk or a little darker.Don't use a scope or your sights.Just shoot off the hip like the Rifleman does.Trying to hit a target by watching the arc of the tracer in flight is quite challenging.

Eh... we've had all that stuff at the Plinking range at one time or another. Heck, if all I had to shoot at was a piece of paper I'd sell all my recreational guns. ;)

Now get out your K22s and shoot the hundred yard gong. Very much the same joy.

NOW THAT IS FUN.
Used to do that with (7.62) 308 for you guys. Belt fed 1 in 5 disintegrating link 800 rds at a time.

:D

Now I've got visions of y'all shooting watermelons like in The Day of the Jackal!

I'll see your watermelons and raise you half a pig :p

Honestly folks, I look on in horror, when I watch Gun shows on the idiot box and see them shooting through and exploding watermelons, all that delicious juicy goodness splattered, what a waste, the Mrs who enjoys watching them as much as I, gets even madder. Eat the watermelon, shoot up that monstrosity of fruit that is.......the grapefruit, it's just sour and bitter and deserves what's coming to it. ;)

Is that the RedJacket range you guys have there? :D

Right.

I'm still chuckling at the notion that fruit will not biodegrade over night. Around here, critters transform it into fertilizer within hours. I wonder if he thought folks were tossing fruit down the their lane at an indoor range? :D

I'm sure I would be suspended from attending and probably have to undergo psych evaluation if I were caught tossing fruit at my indoor range...hehe childish but I only hit the stuff that's pitched. :)

Tall enough roof... be like shooting clays. Call it Sporting Fruit Cocktail.

Maybe he thought folks were tossing grapefruit at bowling pins during league night... kinda like at the circus. Which I guess is better than firing rounds at 10-Pin Alley. I'm all confused now... Hope I don't wear my bowling shoes to the shooting range by mistake.

Where do I get overnight biodegradable bullets?

The furthest I've taken mine out is 600 yds. I was too lazy to go and check for hits, so we'll just assume that........

I mean I was really good at 20 yards so it stands to figure.....

Actually, a great thread, challenges me to do some distance shooting and see what I'm capable of. I know the rifle is up to it, me on the other hand needs testing.
