My .44 Mountain Gun is pretty rough on my hands but I try to avoid the "Goodyear Solution" when I can. I wrote Steve and asked if he could make me a set of stocks patterned after Jordan Troopers. He said "yes" and that he had some nice walnut he would use. They arrived today and I thought I should show you fellows his work!

They look great, very nicely figured wood.
I'm thinking that I could use a set of those.
Thanks for the photo.

Beautiful! I have a couple of sets he made for me. His work is great.

These pics are from the final sanding to first layer of finish.

Thanks for the photos, Kid. I try to keep a few notes to go with the various pistols and revolvers and photos are a great way to track the changes.

I love the finish on those! I have some amazing wood just like that and I want to get the maximum depth appearance. What finish was used?

I got the blanks from someone that does shotgun stocks, and this particular specimen was outstanding, just too small for shotgun stocks. I've thought of having it made into stocks for my Marlin 39A original Golden, but the factory stocks on that are already pretty good.

My 686+ however...

Jeff

I used Formby's satin Tung Oil finish. Sanded to 600 gr. I use Tru-oil a lot, but I prefer Formby's when there is marbling with Orange and Blue tones, or small whispy curl. Formby's is clearer and changes the natural color less.

Wanted to get back with a range report on the Mountain Gun with the Trooper stocks. I ordered them in hopes they might down the pain with magnum loads and I got what I asked for! I shot 20 rounds of pretty hot .44 specials and 65 rounds of various horsepower magnum loads and my hands felt none the worse for wear. I should add that I have some arthritis problems--these new stocks were just the prescription for my bad hands.
