I'm going to try some 38 Long Colt loads with 105 grain lead bullets. I think I'll be shooting for something in the 700-750 fps range.

I have about a half dozen manuals, none of which have 38 Long Colt data. If I can't find any data, I'll adjust down from 38 Special data to get a starting load, but I would appreciate anything that members can provide from data manuals or personal experience. I have numerous powders, such as W231, Bullseye, W244, Universal Clays and HP-38.

Hodgdon supplies data for a 125gr and 150gr bullet. It is completely safe to use the data for the 125gr bullet with your 105gr bullet. My other manuals are not accessible right now. I will try to update when I get to them.

I assume you are not intending to use it in one of the old Colt military DA revolvers from the 19th century. If so, I would just use .38 Special data for a 105 grain bullet. If there is any data available. In a more modern .38 Special revolver, you might try using around 3.0-3.5 grains of any of the faster pistol/shotshell propellants such as Bullseye, Red Dot, Clays, AA#2, or 700-X. Should produce a very mild load for such a lightweight bullet.

For what it's worth
My old "Home guide to cartridge conversions" by George Nonte: 148 gr bullet, 2.5 gr Bullseye or 150 gr bullet, 3.0 gr Bullseye. 750 fps/800 fps.
2nd edition, copyright '61/'67 He used a trimmed 38 special case.

I subscribe to a website, ammoguide.com that publishes loads for most cartridges.

You need to subscribe for full access, but I have screen shot some data here.. you obviously should research these loads yourself and I take no responsibility other that telling you where i got the info so you can research it..
