I want to get a 45 caliber revolver that can do double duty as a CCW and home defense gun. Any ideas?

See if you can find a S&W 625 with a 4" bbl. Big N-frame but shoots incredibly well. Good luck with your search.

Another vote for the 625 as an HD gun. Probably too large for most people to carry concealed, however.

Try to find one of these. A 625 Mountain gun. This one's a 625-6 (no lock). .45 Colt, not .45 ACP. I modified this one to my tastes - red ramp front sight, Ahrends retro classic stocks, old-style cylinder release, and an action job by Nelson Ford of Phoenix. I think one of these would fill your bill perfectly.

For a house gun in .45 ACP, I favor this one. It's a 625 Model of 1988, modified as above. Truly slick action, extremely accurate. I still favor the .45 Colt for all-around use, though - you can handload it safely to a more robust level than the shorter .45 ACP.

the 625 mountian gun looks alot like a model 66, are they the same size K-frame? What is a fair price for the 625 in 45 acp. I like the 45 colt but I do not reload for that caliber (might start though I am thinking of getting into SASS cowboy match shooting but that's another thread).

Check out item no.26291 at Bud's gun shop. 4 in. 45 acp for 652. delivered. Non JM model 4 inch.

No, the M-625's are N frames, both ACP and Colt. S&W doesn't make, and never has, anything double action in .45 caliber that was on anything but an N frame. I don't think, even with a 5-shot L frame (L's are sized between K's and N's), there is room for a .45 caliber in any S&W but an N frame.

The Mountain Guns have a slender, tapered barrel with just an ejector rod shround under the barrel that looks kinda sorta like a Model 66, while most of the other M-625's have a full-length barrel underlug, like a Colt Python. The Mountain Guns thus weigh less, are handier, tote better but kick slightly more; I don't think any factory .45 ACP or Colt ammo kicks hard enough for the extra weight to matter, though.

S&W has made .45 ACP revolvers since 1917. Lots of great choices, 1917, Brazilian, 1950 Military/M-22, 1950 Target/M-26, 1955 Target/M-25, M-625 both underlug barrel and Mountain Gun...

Consider the Model 22 as well (4" bbl, fixed sighted Thunder Ranch Special).

Also, there is a Thunder Ranch Model 325 with 4" bbl. and a light attachment. If I was to use the same gun to carry and as a Home Defender, I'd look seriously at this one. It is light weight (scandium frame) and powerful, with adjustable sights. Once you've had a light on a nightstand piece, there is no going back.
