Hi, this is going to be a super long shot but I'll try anyway. I'm trying to track down a specific firearm that sold at auction in 2019.

My wife lost her dad in 2018. He was, among many other things, a crackshot and a ballistics analyst. He taught her how to shoot when she was old enough. When he passed, he had his collection sent to auction.

There were supposed to be 2 guns held back from auction: the one my wife learned on (a beautiful '49 .22 K frame that we still have), and a 1971 K38 Masterpiece, which was unfortunately sent to auction and sold.

Is there any possibility of tracking down the new owner? I am trying to see if I can buy it back for her so she can have the guns she was supposed to have from her dad.

If there's anything that can be done, let me know please. Here is the auction link from 2019: SW 14-3 K38 Target Masterpiece Double Action Revolver

Thank you.

Smith & Wesson Model 14-3 K-38 Target Masterpiece Double Action Revolver, #1K74503, .38 Spec. cal., 6'' pinned barrel, dark blue finish, case hardened wide hammer and serrated trigger, checkered walnut grips with S&W medallions; grips are numbered to the gun. Sights include a Patridge front and micrometer click adjustable rear sight. In original two-piece box with matching end label, owner's manual, warranty card, and S&W packing paper. Backside of right grip with the last 5-digits of the serial number; both grips with the full number written on the backside in black marker. Mfg'd 1971. Approx. 99% factory blue remains and this revolver is in excellent overall condition. Metal shows just light handling marks; cylinder with a thin index line, and the majority of the case colors remaining. Factory marks are sharp and clear. Grips also show only light marks from handling. Action is excellent with a bright bore. Box lid shows two areas of finish loss to one of long edges, otherwise showing normal light storage wear. Est.: $500-$750. (Modern/PPT) (Paul Hantke collection)

Sorry this one isn't in my collection. Hope it all works out for you and your family.

You might change your title to include the serial number in case the right person doesn’t read the thread, such as “In search of Serial #1Kxxxxxxx. Good luck in your search.

Ah brilliant, I didn't even think of that. Changed the title, thank you!

Have you contacted the auction company? As a relative they should be able to provide you with bidding winner info or be able to contact them in your behalf. Even at this late date. On a hsndgun that info would need to be logged.

try contacting the auction people....they know...and so do the FFL that worked for them.....next level would be a private investigator with strong LE ties....and alot of $$$$$
