Wanna buy anAR for deer hunting / home defense here in Virginia we can only use 30 cal rounds for hunting so 556/223 is out of the question right now, looking at the MP 15 300 BLK good rifle? or should I go for a 308?

The .300BLK is a good round for hunting. It's not a long distance round though. So, if you plan on taking that deer at 150 yards or closer, it's perfect.

For longer shots go with the .308Win.

I'd probably opt for 7.62x39. About the same as .300 BLK, but commercial ammo cheaper and more readily available if you want to go plinking.

And you might wind up picking up an SKS or AK to go along with the AR.

I'm a fan of 7.62x39 and it's quite capable of humanely taking deer, but if you're hunting over 150 yards or so you'd probably be better off with .308, and besides good .308 hunting loadings will likely be easier to come by, and in greater varieties.

The downside is you'd be dealing with a heavier rifle on your hunts.

In VA you can use anything larger then .22 cal centerfire for deer - not "only use 30 cal" unless you are in a shotgun only area. There are some 6mm and 6.5mm uppers out there and even .45 cal available, so there are lots of choices for an AR platform.

.300BLK is roughly equivalent to 30-30 in the supersonic loadings, and is perfectly capable of short range hunting of medium sized game.

The advantages in an AR platform is it can use 5.56 mags, and you can build a 5.56 upper to swap on when you're not hunting. It's also nice suppressed with subsonic rounds, although there is a significant change in POI from supersonic to subsonic.

Subsonic .300BLK for HD will give you a much more tolerable muzzle signature than .300 supersonic or 5.56, though ballistics are roughly equivalent to .45ACP.

A .308 makes more sense for hunting if longer distances are involved, but is probably not appropriate for most home defense scenarios.
