I am considering purchasing a model 28-2 Highway Patrolman with serial number 15500xx and would like to know how old it is. Any help will be appreciated.

Does anyone know of any problems inherent with this model/vintage?

Is gold lettering original on this gun, or an "enhancement?"

:) The M28-2 was made from 1961 to 1982. To get closer
to the year you need a letter prefix like S or N then a six
digit serial number. Don

Sir:

Are you sure about the serial number? It should probably start with a letter (S or N) and the number of digits looks wrong. (Did you put in an extra "x")?

The gold lettering is something added after it left the factory. Some people like that, some don't. I shouldn't be too hard to remove.

They are great revolvers with no inherent flaws other than their mass. (Some folks prefer lighter .357s since they are easier to carry and "handier". Others love the mass of the M28). Of course, any mechanical device bought used may have been subject to hard wear and / or abuse, so should be examined carefully.

These N frame S&W revolvers do have one small issue that you may not be aware of, They are ADDICTIVE!!! Be prepared to buy more as deemed necessary.

The Model 28's and all N frame S&W revolvers can and will make you poor if you let them and it's easy like me to let them.

They are great, I got one recently. Mine had the lettering filled in w-some white colored stuff...I quickly got rid of the white w-solvent/nylon brush. You can't go wrong w-a 28.

They are fantastic revolvers as they are really a Model 27 without the top strap checkering and a matte blue requiring less labor to polish the metal before bluing. They are identical internally to the Model 27 and it's a flagship gun for S&W.

I agree my model 28-2 4 inch made in 1967 is my best shooting revolver when it comes to shooting 357s. In my opinion it out performs my L frame 686-3 and my two 66s for shooting 357s. I even have a couple Rugers. They don't come close to shooting 357s like my 28-2. There are no issues with the model 28. I suggest you buy it unless the price is just to high.

Good luck,

Thanks everyone for the helpful information. This would be my first .357 so I'm not very familiar with them. I'll check on the serial number when have the gun in my hand again.

Has anyone used a .357 for deer hunting? It seems a bit light for that and I am inclined to restrict that use to my .44, but I am curious if anyone has had either favorable or unfavorable results withthe .357 on deer.

I've used 357 in a rifle years back the well placed shots had the best effect. I just picked up a M19-4 6'bbl for that very purpose. The prices of 44mag have never been this high and these days I never have enough time to reload anything. I've been to the range twice with the 19-4 and I'm still amazed at how well it shoots- I guess shooting my 642-2 ccw@ 20-30 yards the last few months has really paid off on this full size M19-4@50-60 yards.
--happy holidays/shooting--

I misread the first character on the serial number of this model 28-2. The correct number is N5500xx. Can someone can tell me the year of manufacture?

My 4-inch 28-2 is very accurate with most all .38 spl. and .357 mag ammunition at the range. I'll soon have a camera and learn to post pictures of it
