Tried to search on here for a comprehensive list of S&W Models with descriptions, couldn't find anything.

Is that info on this forum anywhere?

I have two S&W revolvers so far with a third on the way. Just trying to see what different models there are from the 1970's on up.

Thankyou! I did a search on Google and found that book in many places, will get one from Amazon ASAP.

definitely get the book. If you have even the slightest interest in anything Smith & Wesson, the book is a must have.

Sorry, but one more "dumb" question. How do you know what model number and what dash number the hangun is?

I bought a 525-2 (or so I was told), but the only real markings on it are .45 ACP. It does have the internal lock. I bought it because it uses the same ammo my 1911 uses, besides, it's a nice S&W revolver!

I wish I could polish it to a mirror finish like my 686.

PS: The book is on order. I also ordered the History of Smith & Wesson by Roy Jinks

Just open the cylinder and look in the yoke cut on the frame. You'll see "MOD" and then "##-#" and that's the model number and dash. There may be some other numbers or letters too but they are just factory fitters marks.

Thanks again guys! The model is actually a 625 and it is a -8. Maybe the receipt was for another gun. He did have a S&W chambered for .45 Colt he told me he sold already.
