I've only shot revolvers and my Desert Eagle 44 mag up to this point and I'm thinking about picking up a 9mm finally. Are there S&W autos similar in quality to the Beretta 92fs and Browning High-Power? I really want an auto that's mostly all metal construction, even a 1911 in 9mm would be nice too!

Well, I'd say if you are looking for an all metal 9mm, you certainly can't go wrong with the 5906. All stainless, full size and very common on the used market (S&W made a ton of them).

S&W 5906 is a great gun I loved mine as far as 1911s I'm a Colt fan and love my Defender 9mm. I had a Kimberly 1911 target 9mm and it was a great shooting gun.

I've owned a Beretta 92 and two 5906s and shot the Hi Power quite a bit: they are comparable and all are quality guns. The manual of arms between the 92 and 5906 is nearly identical, and the Hi Power is a single action. I think it comes down to what fits your hand the best and whether you want a double or single action pistol, but you can't go wrong with a good example of any of these guns.

I've owned Beretta 92s and Browning Hi-Powers, and both are excellent pistols. You should look at the Classic Sig Sauer line. The 226 is one of the ultimate 9mm platforms. They do it all.

You could look for a used 910 also. I bought a 410 and it appears to be as good as my old 469. You might get a used 469 or 669 - I don't know. You can't go wrong with any metal Smith.

You need to go pick some up. Many double stack 9's tend to have a "blocky" grip that does nothing to enhance control/accuracy. Sold off my 92F for that very reason. Your choice should come from as much "what fits" as what's popular. I have ML hands and while I'm a recent convert to the S&W M&P series , I do like the feel of the Hi power more so than any other of the 8 9's I've owned.

Go out and fondle as many as you can and at least try a M&P despite it's polymer frame. Nothing fits or shoots like it IMHO. It was enough to convert this died in steel and wood only guy anyway.

M&P 9mm and 40

I have full sized M&P pistols in 9mm and 40 cal. and I really like them both. I shoot them very well and they are very reliable and durable. They fit my hands well and they actually have the shortest trigger reset distance of any of the double action semi-autos I tried. I used the 40 cal for an entire season of our weekly speed shooting league and it never failed once. I probably put 3000-4000 rounds through that gun that year without problems.

I have or had several different 9mm semi autos over the years (beretta, S&W, Glock, Browning, and Springfield). The HiPower is by far my favorite. Fits like a glove and its a true work of art.
