Al steal at $950!
I've only seen one in the wild and I own it. Not rare, but hard to find. Probably born in 1996 and I would expect to pay $1200+, $1500 or more with box and goodies.

Product code 104192 is a 2-1/2" bbl, 7-shot model. Made from 1996-98. This is for a 686.

I think yours is a 686 Distinguished Combat Magnum Plus model. Production began in 1996, smooth trigger & three different barrel lengths.

Dash 4s began in 1996 with the 7-shot offering.

All info from the S&W Encyclopedia.

Sorry I wasn't more help.

That appears to be a 686-4+ and it is a good price if the gun is in good shape. I have one like it and it is quite accurate despite the short barrel.

It is the -4 variant, which was the first to have a seven shot option. The -4 guns were made only for a year or two before the -5 came out.

Its local im going to take a look at it tomorrow. the picture quality isnt too good but the revolver looks pristine. Ive been looking for a carry revolver and 7 shots of 357 magnum will do the trick

Glad you decided to pick up that prelock 686-4...looks like a great package for a very good price! You could probably snag that with 9 Benjamins for an even better deal. You can't go wrong with a SS 7-shot snubby! A few weeks ago I decided to buy a 3" bbl. 686-6 Plus with the unfluted cylinder. Got it for $750 cash OTD with a few extra sets of Hogue and Pachmayr stocks. I recently purchased this new 1791 Gunleather holster so that I can carry the 686 around occasionally. Hope you buy it and post some pics. Good luck and Enjoy!

I can confidently say just about everyone here wants a 7 shot -4 686 in 2 1/2 or 3 inch. I see them for sale from time to time but at prices much higher than $ 950. Jump on it!

picture of the 686. Sorry for the poor quality
Do you have a picture of the box and it's end label?

Since transitioning to computer printed labels in the 1980s, the actual date of manufacture is printed right on the label itself 95% of the time. There are a few exceptions

During the time frame that your revolver would have been manufactured the date is a four digit number listed under the heading "SPEC ORD"

BTW, all 586/686 revolvers are Distinguished Combat Magnums

I was advised that this is a 686+-5. I need to dig it out to verify that; it's been a while since that gun accompanied me in the feral hog fields of the Rio Grande Valley.

As far as I can tell S&W only offers a 2.5" 686+ from the PC and S&W says it is MSRP $1329.00. So that gives you an idea of value.

I was unaware of the fact that
just about everyone here wants a 7 shot -4 686 in 2 1/2 or 3 inch
but that's an interesting statement as I have a 2.5", 3", and 4" 686+. (I guess none are -4s but to me that's irrelevant) I bought the 2.5" sometime in the mid-1990s at a LGS at $350.00. I bought the 4" at a Heritage auction in the early 2000s and by the time they were done with their fees I paid basically MSRP of around a $1000. I carried that one a few times in the feral hog fields of a central Texas ranch.

The 3" came to me after a similar discussion right here on this Forum. We were in the middle of a thread about the 686 models, just as we are now, one thing led to another and a Forum member offered me his barely used 3" M686+. I'm not even sure why I bought it, I just liked it is reason enough around this campfire. He even remarked that he didn't see much difference between 2.5" and 3" and neither did I but it fit into the collection and that was that.

I go to several gun shows and am always looking for the 686 in shorter barrels. Nine days ago in Lima a friend said he saw a 2 1/2 inch 686 pre MIM 7 shot for $ 850. The owner came over and it was a lock -5 so I passed. I see a lot of -5's but am not interested. I talk with these -5 owners and they say everyone has the same reaction.

There WAS a 3" 686 CS1 on the local sales site for $ 1850. It had been on there for over a year + with no takers. (Just checked and did not see it.) He puts it up for awhile and then removes it. He also had a 3" 66 (like mine) but sold it. I have conversed with him and he is firm on price.

Just too rich for my blood.

My bad on confusing the -5 having the lock. I strongly prefer that my S&W revolvers have flash chromed hammers and triggers and firing pin on the hammer. I did not mean to disparage those who do not share my view.

Just comes down to personal choice.
