Losing Faith...MP 45

Greetings Everyone...

Well I have been excited about my MP 45 FS. Fired it 1st time 2 weeks ago, fired great.

I field stripped the pistol tonight and noticed that the take down lever was hanging up. I found that pin that holds the mechanism in place had worked its way out part way. I managed to get it back in place.

Has anyone else experienced this? Just rather disgusted with shoddy cheap construction.

Friend of mine is a Glock fanatic, never had a problem. Was thinking of selling my Beretta 92fs and getting a MP 9, but that Beretta is built rock solid!

Hey Bob...I cant speak to the full size but I own the M&P .45c and I have had zero problems with the takedown lever. I have around 2k rounds through mine and have never had a single issue with pins backing out. I only have two small gripes about my M&P which is really good because I consider myself among the pickiest of gun owners. #1: The takedown tool included in the grip starts to wear and soon wont fit tightly if you take it in and out several times...my advice, figure out which size grip swell fits you the best and leave that tool in there, use a seperate tool. #2: The magazine release is very sensitive and will give you issues (in my humble opinion) in an IWB holster unless you set up the mag release to the oustide of your body. These are two pretty small issues for me and my M&P .45C is my favorite pistol...I hope Smith and Wesson can help you with yours...Best of luck

I think I will call Smith and Wesson and send it in. If it comes out this early in the game, will be a on going problem.

I just expect better then this. Will see about getting that up dated Ma sear put in to while I am at it.

Was it the forward-most roll pin? Was it tight going back in? You may just need another roll pin. S&W should send you one, no need to ship the gun. If it's an issue with the frame hole being to big, that would need a warranty repair.

After pushing the pin back in, and firing the gun, did it work its way back out? If it doesn't, this was just a case where the pin didn't get hammered in all the way at the factory, and it should be fine now.

All manufacturers let some mistakes get out of the factory, what matters is how they stand behind their product. S&W is one of the best at this.

The take down lever is designed to be easily removed by rotating slightly upwards and pulling straight out.

The trigger pivot pin just taps out right to left. Easily after the take down lever is rotated down. It ain't gonna fall out.

The roll pin (coil pin) that secures the locking block into the frame has to be hammered out. Ain't gonna fall out either.

(All discussed in this video.)

If any pins fall or work out there's a problem. Wrong roll pin won't hold. Needless removal/replacement of these pins is not recommended.

Actually Bob, that pin is supposed to be out a bit further on the left side than the right side. You will notice the small cutout on the TDL where the pin fits... in order to remove the TDL out of the frame, we usually have to just drive that pin toward the right side enabling the TDL to be able to turn past the pin and then out..

Thanks everyone for your responses....

I the lever was scraping the pin to where I had to pull the lever out to make it turn.

I "punched" the pin back in. Does not seem to move...however :

1. The lever now pushes the guide rod a bit...

2. Must hold the lever down or will flip back up.

3. Putting slide back on, the lever automatically flips back up.

I think what I will do is order spare parts for this thing. Will fire it next weekend and see what happens. If everything goes OK, will just leave it alone.

Was going to fire it yesterday, but fired my Beretta 92 instead. Was very pleased with it.

This does not really build a lot of confidence to be honest. That said, shoots very well, I really want to believe that S & W came out with a winner. Time will tell.

2 & 3 are essentially normal....

Not every M&P will do this but my two Compacts (9 and .40) do it. My Full Size 40 doesn't....

Part of it, I guess I am looking for things to go wrong. I have read a lot of things, dead triggers, rust, ftf... etc.

I will leave it as is, and pay attention to that pin next time I fire it. If it does not work lose again, I won't worry much about it.

It will take some time for me to gain real trust in this gun. That said, it does shoot very well.

Stu , Bob... pretty easy to fix that TDL..... to be like Stu's FS40.. all mine stay down when I remove the slide.. but they didn't always..

Frankly I think I have been concerned about nothing ( making a deal out of nothing ).

After I have had this pistol for a while, and fired it more, I will trust it more and more. I am going on a limb, but I think this will turn out to be the finest pistol I have ever owned. Still love my Beretta 92 fs though lol!

I am still am thinking of the MP 9, thinking of ways to finance it!
