One of our orange cats, an 11 year-old ginger tabby, passed this afternoon as a result of heart failure secondary to thyroid disease.

His name was Xiao Shīzi, Chinese for "little lion," and indeed he was. The way he purred when he decided to climb up on your chest at the dinner table defined what true love is, or at least what it sounds like.

Here's some pictures from ten years ago, about the time of his first birthday. He's the one on top in the chair, and on the bottom in the tree. That's his brother and litter mate, Lao Hu ("tiger"), he's playing with.

It's good to remember him this way. We will all miss him.

Sorry for your loss

I know the pain of losing a beloved pet. My sympathies.

That's a good question from Ameridaddy, about his brother.

I think you had a good idea:

"Too soon to tell. We let him sniff and lick the body so that he knows what happened."

We brought Bria home so we could give her a final resting place with us. Our two younger cats (Toby and Niko) miss Bria and have been looking for her. Our youngest, Niko, also a black cat, but only 10 months old, misses her the most. He looked to Bria as her surrogate Mommy.

You can see Niko and Bria together in the picture below.

The bond our cat friends share with one another is very touching to behold.
I hope that Lao Hu also finds peace and solace during his time of loss.

Warmest Regards,
Jim

BlueRidgeBoy, it always tears me up when I lose a loved pet, dog or cat. So I know how you feel and what you are going through. We lost our beloved wolf hybrid last year to an autoimmune disorder and she passed just a month or so before she would have made 5 years old and I still miss her dearly. And we have a cat who is now going on 14 years old and I can see that she is starting to lose muscle tone and mass, so I know that her end isn't going to be too far down the road. She adopted me right after a hurricane had passed and we figured she must have gotten lost from her family and ended up at our house. Whenever I get in from the rig, she always comes and sits on my lap and gives me love nips and kisses telling me how much she misses me when I am at work.

THE TAO OF MEOW

An entry from THE TAO OF MEOW : (by Carl Japikse)

If a cat has nine lives,
Does he have nine deaths as well?

Some people think no one knows what death is like,
But that is ridiculous.
I know, because I am a Wise Cat.
I know, because the Meow knows,
And I am part of the Meow.

Death is just life in reverse;
You step out of life into death,
You step out of death into life.
Death is a lover we keep on trying to leave,
But somehow never manage to forget.

Some people are afraid of death,
Yet they live so stupidly
That their life is constantly slipping away from them.
They are like a sieve,
So full of holes that the life force leaks right out of them.
It leaks through their fears,
Their worries,
And their lusts;
It leaks through their wishes,
Their dreams,
And their faults.
They start dying the moment they are born.

The Wise Cat cherishes the life force within him
And does not let it leak away.
He acts with courage, kindness, patience, and joy,
So there is no place for his life force to slip out.
When death does come,
It arrives in a carriage with four horses,
So that he can make a proper exit from this world,
And never be accused of cheating death.

The Wise Cat lands in the Afterworld
On all four paws.
