I dont think you should have any problem with factory 357 Magnum loads in a S&W 686 six incher.
I had a 4 incher and worked up some 187 gr cast gas check loads to 1300 fps. I was just starting to get a little kick from the stock target grips. Regular 158 gr factory loads seem mild to me due to the weight of the revolver. If recoil bothers you, get a set of Pachmayr Diamond Grips. Then shoot whatever loads you like.
Firing 38 Specials will not hurt your revolver. If it did, S&W would tell you.
