Luck, or as I prefer to call it, fortune.

Does anyone have an explanation of why some people always defeat their opponents, at games of chance, catch all the fish, find lost things, when others can't Etc.
Our youngest, now deceased son, was one of those fortunate folks. He always gave our eldest son his choice of fishing gear and fishing spot, and inevitably, caught all the fish. He'd willingly trade spots and still catch all the fish. Likewise, he never lost in family games such as Monopoly, and was extremely popular with girls. Strangely, he never used his 'Luck/fortune' to gambol. Can anyone explain this strange, true phenomenon?

A sad nostalgic dad, Chubbo

Well, it's not an answer to your question but when it comes to explaining good fortune I have always liked the adage, "It's better to be lucky than smart."

I have see this truth borne out many times, not least, from my perspective, in my own life.

Many people make their luck. Not a coincidence they are in the right place at the right time. Or not in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't fish or play monopoly well but I would guess he was extremely competitive.
By the way my Tapatalk feed is bringing up threads as much as 10 or more years old with an indication that the latest reply was only minutes ago. I don't always catch it.

Catching the most fish after 15 years of fishing, is not "Luck".

Knowledge, is the key to success.

A $8.00 reel and Walmart line can catch fish................ but

just my 2 cents.

Cubbo, i feel you sir. my younger brother always catches the most fish. i remember it all started when he was about 5 yeas old. you can be right beside him in the boat, same bait, same gear, rod tips touching and that man will catch the most fish EVERY time.

he bought a lotto ticket and won $100,000.00 . Deer seem to be attracted to him.

i love him to no end. love to go fishing with him because you are right next to guarantied to catch fish. he has 2 sons who seem to have the same talent. if you hear that young man shoot you can count on game on the ground. i was there when he harvested 2 deer, 1 shot.

thanks for starting thread. stirred up good memories. krs/kenny

also he can do it all. carpenter, electrition, truck driver. welder, plumber i've yet to see anything he can't do.

thanks again

My old shooting buddy would buy an arms length of raffle tickets every shoot we went to. He would always bury our table in winnings. Luck of the Irish he would tell me. Another was a preachers son who never gambled till I took him to his first casino at 30 yrs of age. First time he played a slot machine he accidently played max bet..and hit it for $8500.A month later he bought a raffle ticket from the Policemans Association..and won a new Harley. I started calling him Mr. Lucky. I honestly believe Lady Luck prefers some and snubs others. Never helps to ask for her blessing once in a while..:)

Throughout my life I have known:
-A guy in High School who could pick up any musical instrument and play it like he had practiced a lifetime. He was in prison last time I heard.
-A friend who could drop a line in a roadside pothole and catch a fish. We fished together for years and he would always pull up something.
-Many people who were "natural shots." I bought my 1st wife a SW Model 36, 2" SB nickel as a gift. 1st time out she shot a sub 2" group at 50 ft D/A. Her dad was retired Illinois State Trooper but he never once took her shooting. Several friends who did similar feats without previously handling a handgun.
Our Creator handed out many gifts, however having multiples in the same person is rare. How many folks do you know with Einstein's brain, Beethoven's musical talent and movie star looks? Joe

It is a real deal. I have a buddy of 50 years that could fall out of an airplane land in a soft haystack walk away and find a hundred dollar bill while brushing off the hay. Seriously he is the luckiest person I have ever known. And it is not through clean living and great life choices. Always puzzles me.

My son is very lucky. Years ago he bought a pack of sports card from a store, inside was a Very valuable Michael Jordan card, $7K IIRC. Few years later bought a Real D-Day Ranger Assault vest that brought $2.5K before the movie.

Used to play some BlackJack in Vegas.
Often with Good Friend Dick.
We would sit side by side, and his cards would quite often be better than mine.
And his Hits would be better.
I have gotten so frustrated that I insisted that we trade seats.
Dick, The Dealer, and others Players would laugh.
And it usually didn't improve my situation.

Some are very lucky... But I think luck most of the time is preparation. Had a farmer friend..He carried a 1000 bucks withhim...He bought more good stuff for cheap prices with cash...He seemed charmed. I played Blackjack at the casinos in Atlantic City and Vegas. I usually did well.. But I could read about 4 decks of cards pretty well 5 and 6 decks not as well. But enough to win. Learned a lot in Casinos though. They even believe in LUCK. Won about 16 grand one day in a short time. they changed dealers 5 times before I got cold. then quit. Still had 11000 of their money. They would do anything to keep a winner in the game. As far as fish?? go out with my father in law and he'd ALWAYS catch the first...biggest and most. He was oblivious when he fished and still made me look BAD!
