LUMBER PRICES HAVE GOTTEN SO HIGH THAT-

I recently built a section of cedar picket fence less than 12' long. Cost of materials was over $300. Each piece of lumber was about 2x the price I expected.

For a woodworking project, I found that 3/4" oak plywood was cheaper than 3/4" BC pine plywood for a 4x8 sheet.

Things are crazy. Not sure if your post was a joke, but it is certainly plausible.

Good lord! Thank god I’ve retired lol
Im guessing that 1x10 is #2 rather than d ?

Aint that something? I'm building a garage and every sliver of wood going into it is coming from the local sawmill, at a 1/4 the price. Was never like that before.

Try plumbing.

1/2 type L copper pipe has doubled in price since last August. I haven't priced any lately, but I'm pretty sure romex wire has gone up a lot.

Water heaters are scarce, especially natural gas models.

It's a bad year to build a house.

I think the last time I bought 1/2” cdx it was maybe $20!

I worked at a lumber company for many years until 2010. My memory isn't the best anymore, but I'm thinking that I used to sell it for $12-15. I'd like to know the story behind the current situation.

Regards,
Andy

I talked to a friend of mine who is a contractor that said that when Covid hit last year, a lot of lumber companies were forced to close for a period of time or went out of business. Over a period of time, the backlog kept building up. Now that things are semi-normal, the demand far exceeds the supply, hence the high prices. Also, throw in that gas prices have doubled within the last 5 months which caused transportation costs to go up. He expects it will be late fall before prices go down close to normal.

In Alabama, where I live, an 8 foot 2x4 at Lowes is $9 each and most of them look like seconds or thirds. I had to buy a 3/8" sheet of 4x8 plywood 2 months ago and it was $72. Won't be seeing a lot of new homes built and that is why used homes in my area are now being bid on and stays on the market for maybe 2 days. My neighbor recently put his on the market and the highest bid was $15k more than his asking price. The realtor listed it for 3 days and it sold in two. Definitely a seller's market here.

The increased prices are mostly on lumber (soft woods etc.) sold as a comodity where hardwoods are not. A lot of the problem with price is that the soft wood comes mainly from Canada and there is a tarrif by Canada attached. The hardwood is mainly from N/E and mid-west US.

Many home builders around here are exercising their contractual right to cancel because they cannot build the house for the original quoted price.

Guy I know has signed a contract for a house to be built in TN. Builder has since mentioned that the place has appreciated by $50k or more before ground has been broken simply because of the increase in the price of lumber. I'm waiting for the builder to pull the rug. We shall see.
