Does anyone here know if the old Lyman Spartan (grey "C" type) reloading press uses standard RCBS shell holders and dies? Thanks for any information.

I don’t have one to look at, but from my fading memory, the Spar-T ptrss uses Lyman’s “X-type” (aka RCBS type) shell holders, but if not, Lyman still sells their shell holder adaptors and the necessary special priming punch.

My very first press after a Lee Loader was the Lyman Spartan. It came in a kit. That was back in the '70's. As best as I can remember, it does take standard RCBS shell holders, as well as, all common US brands. The shell holders are held in by a small set screw.

Thanks folks. I'm looking at one on line and doubt if the seller really knows anything about it. Oh, and it's a simple "C" press, not a Spar-T

I have one here.
C-press,,,standard 7/8-14 thread reloading dies.
Takes Lyman, RCBS, LEE, ect ShellHolders / They slide into the slot on the top of the ram and are held in place by a small set screw on this one as B E Mike says.

In the 60's, I had one as well , and it seems that the SHolders were held in place by a small spring/detent so they snapped in and out of place.
But I may be mis-remembering,,that's gets to be entirely possible at this point!

Just to be accurate about description the shell holders used by RCBS, etc, which can be called universal, Are correctly called "Pacific Type" shell holders as Pacific was the company that originally designed them! Pacific became part of Hornady many years ago.

I am a little late to this thread. If you are still looking at the Spartan, check with the seller and see if it comes with the primer catcher. They sell for almost as much as the press, if you can find one. The last one I saw for sale, seller was asking $35. I still use my Spartan ( from the late 60s, bought new) .
