I have a chance to purchase a no dash 28 6" barrel with very light bluing ware at the end of the barrel the s/n is S-214540 can someone enlighten me as to mfg.year and price . What i should look for in the way of problems.It comes with box papers and tools,Box has some light issues.

Are you sure there's not another number in that SN? I count an S and 5 numbers. Need one more. First three after the S are all I need. Can't answer till then.

It left the factory sometime between 1960 and 1961. If it's a no dash, it would have been early 1960, as the SCSW says the 28-1 began in 1960 with a change from right hand to left hand thread for the extractor rod. The 28-2 in 1961 eliminated the fourth screw. A 6" barrel with some holster wear would go about $675 - - $725 around here.

Problems with a M28? Not likely. But have the box checked by a qualified boxsmith before attempting to box the gun.

Not completely true......I have 6" no dash S211743 shipped Oct 1961 per Mr. Jinks. I also have 4" no dash S211862 shipped Aug 1961. It may have shipped 1960....but I'd be leaning 1961 myself.

And I'd pay $725 in a heartbeat for a 6" 4 screw in the box.....but I'm a sucker for an old HP.

The few m28 w/6" 99.99% condition (2) and one other one has a ring on the cylinder were $695 each. But most won't accept the cost going up. But your cost is very affordable since I see the m28 here locally for $1,000.
To me anything under a grand is a buy. Anything under $800 is a steal.
Just look at some of the online prices. I thought it would take time for my m28 $695 value to go up but it soared in a few months. I'm not interested in selling them I just want to shoot and enjoy owning them.

I bought my 28 no dash a few years ago for $450. It is a s serial #. 1960 ish. Very minor blue wear at muzzle. Rubber grips, and no box. I do have a set of like new diamond factory grips for it. Keep it nice and the value will keep going up! I really like shooting mine.This how I received mine. I am old, and can't find pics of it's current state! Enjoy your HP Smith! Bob

You just about doubled your money just wait another six months. They may tripple in price.

I don't see that many N Frames on GB like I did a few months back. Maybe this musical chair thing settling down. These N Frames found new homes.
I feel once these n frames are gone from the for sale sights they will become harder to find then watch the prices climb.

I enjoy my s&w HP's too.

Don't worry you did ok price wise even if we paid $1,000 in a short time soon they will be a solid $1,500. Trust me. It's going to get silly price wise.

1959-1962 were transition years with a number of feature changes going on in the K and N frame guns. There is going to be some slippage in recorded ship dates for various dash numbers during this period. By that I mean that some no-dash guns are going to be found to have shipped after dash 1 and even possibly dash 2 guns. Some dash 2 guns will have shipped before some dash 1 guns, etc. Remember, ship dates do not precisely correspond to manufacture or assembly dates. The thing you must do is look at the dash number and features and be aware that guns were shipped as they were pulled from the vault on demand. Ship date sequences do not involve exact science. We are talking about history, which is notoriously unscientific!

So, I presume, that you did buy it? If so, could you post pictures? Also, could you double check the model number? A 28, with no dash afterwards, is well worth the price. If it's a 28-1, you paid about 20% of the actual value.

It's hard to put a value on them. The prices are all over the place recently.
I would price my m28 no dash and m28-2 in 99.99% at $1,200 & my m27-2 in 99.99% condition in blue at $1,500 & nickel in the same condition at $1,800. Mainly I'll probably never find a better one. From what I'm seeing price wise some lesser condition ones are priced higher online?
