M-41 missing the cocking indicator

I found this beauty at a lgs paid $850 out the door and store owner is going to order me a spare mag for free.
I don`t know if you can tell from the photo ,but it looks great.
It is an older one ser# 923xx, which originally had a cocking indicator, however it is now missing.

I knew a professional shootist- Robert Sheffield of the Memphis gun club- many years ago and he had a M-41 and if memory serves me right he would routinely remove the indicators from his and any 41 he performed any gun smithing on.

But that was 30 odd years ago and I could be way wrong.

Any of you knowledgeable folks have any thing to say, should I try to replace the indicator or just leave it out?

I expect getting a new one will be quite difficult to do, and even though I haven't shot it yet it appears to work just fine without it.
The scope is not very good so I also need advise on a better optic and mount.

I have a 41 with the cocking indicator that I bought new in the 70s. At that time some believed that the trigger pull was enhanced by removal of the cocking indicator. Don't know if this is true, as I kept mine intact.

Only you can answer whether you should replace it. I like mine with the indicator. I would imagine S&W has them.

Watch eBay for model 41 parts. There was a small set of model 41 parts for sale that had the indicator I think. Although it may have been listed on it's own. I had thought of bidding on it but didn't really need one and let it go by. I do check for model 41 parts though and sometimes there are new old stock parts listed.

To me I hate to see a gun with missing parts as its just not complete the way it was made with out them. My view is that makes it worth less with stuff missing from its original condition. That would drive me Nuts and could not stay in my safe until it was fixed.

I was able to replace my missing CI- Thanks to forum member Tom Beckwith.
He not only had the parts , but he sent me a link to photos which showed how to do it- well almost how.
Getting the CI and the hammer back was very fiddley, until I figured how to hold the indicator pin with a small forceps, and then install the hammer. It works good now and I`m happy. I just hope it shoots as good now as it did before the installation.
