m 57 41 GNR

I just ordered a 41 GNR built on a M 57 with a 6 inch barrel, from Gary Reeders custom guns. Has any body owned one of his guns in 41 GNR or any others, if so how did you like it and how did it shoot. I already have a 657 with an 8 inch barrel and a 57 mountain gun and have been looking for a 6 inch 57 for a while. I found this on his web site and it was a 6 inch 57 and it shoots a 41 bullet it just has a little more power in the 44 mag case. He said the light load for a 210 grain bullet moves at 1900 fps. any way Thanks for any info.

I don't know what a 41gnr is yet but the 41mag with a 210jhp has a tad more power than a 44mag with a 210gr bullet. The cor-bon 210gr jhp is 1350fps / 800ft lbs i believe. Thats not too shabby for a 41mag. Now the 41gnr is at 1900fps thats almost rifle ballastics. Ok the 41gnr is a 44case thats necked down to a 41. Its like a super sized 357SIG which i think was copied from the orginal russian 7,62x25 tokarev round. Even the 7,62x25 tokarev is one speedy little flat shooting round too. How long has the 41gnr been around? I'm surprised that the manufacturers haven't offered this caliber yet. Having the warp speed surely ups the anti. To me anyway. My only question is how is it on the recoil? I thinking the recoil will be between the 41mag and the 44mag? And were talking 1,700fps and up. I think i max'd out some of my 44mag loads at 1,500 fps but thats pushing it. Bill

...yes I have one but unfortunately I have yet to load for it.

Had Gary build a 5 shot 5.5" .41 Magnum Bisley stainless about 2001....and had the .41 GNR cylinder added just because if I was going to have a full blown custom gun why not make it unique. I've got the dies and .44 Magnum brass but just have never gotten around to loading for it. I think this is because I like heavy cast bullets from this gun and the GNR is really a lightweight jacked bullet gun.

I think you will find that Gary's estimates of velocity from a 6" revolver to be somewhat "optimistic"....1900 from a Contender is possible but with a standard 6" S&W 57 running 210s in the 1400s you will find with the extra powder space of the .44 Magnum case 210s will more run in the 1600-1750 area. Try H110/296 or AA1680 for powder..everything else is too fast...

I have some 210 gr hard cast from Penn bullets that I shoot in my 657. I hope you are right on the 1900 being ti fast. Robert at Penn bullets says his cast bullets are good up to 1600, so if I load the GNR down maybe they will work. I also have some Remington 200 gr semi jacket I am going to try also. Superman you said you have a second cylinder for yours does that mean I can get a reguler 41 mag for this gun and shoot both I hope!!!!! I am also wondering what the recoil will be like not much more than the 41 mag I hope even if it is more it still should be a great gun. Thanks again for any help.

I've got one in the snubby Redhawk flavor and have found the fullhouse ,light jacketed bullet quest not particularly well suited for the short barrel. DUH!
My new vision is cramming that big 44 case full of Trailboss and tipping it with 210 or 200 gr wadcutters and seeing what kind of a thumper that makes.
The rounds are loaded and waiting but sadly ,no time to shoot them yet.

If the 41 GNR is a 44 Mag necked down to 41, I don't understand the interest.

The 41 throws a .41 bullet, the 44 throws a .429 bullet - are you saying that whopping 19 hundredths of a inch difference is going to allow you to add enough powder to make a big difference?

On the Raven Ammunition page I find...

" 41 GNR
The oldest of Gary Reeders’ custom cartridges is the 41 GNR. This one developed back in 1979 and released in 1980. It is a 44 Magnum necked down to 41. This one will put a 170 gr. Sierra JHP out of an 7 inch barrel at 1800 fps."

From the Hodgdon.com load data page for the 41 Magnim, they get 1887 fps with the same bullet, so what's the big deal? To say you have something different?

Len, what's the problem with Reeder? I have several and I am quite happy with them. Any minor problems I have had were dealt with quickly. Could you elaborate? Dave

I had a Contender barrel chambered by Reeder. I shot 170 gr bullets and got terrific accuracy. Sorry I can't quote numbers and loads but it's been many years since I fooled with it. Load data comes with the dies from Reeder. Overall I though it was a great cartridge. Remember, it was designed for the lighter bullets.

Gary Reeder has an impecable reputation for building very good revolvers. Am currently thinking of sending him my Ruger Redhawk to have him convert it to his Mastadon model in .510.
