I hope I'm putting this in the right place. Because of my aging eyes, I can no longer see space on each side of the front site on my model 63. I don't know much about sizes of rear site leafs but mine is the original. I need to change the rear site leaf to a wider one (I guess). Can anyone shed some light on the leaf sizes and maybe make some suggestions on what size I need? Thanks.

I'm not sure you can put a "wider" sight, the sight assembly will only permit so much. You could possibly file a wider groove in the existing blade. You might be able to get something bigger like a Millett, but I'm no sight expert. Others will chime in.

I too have the same problem seeing the front sight so I use reading glasses in 1.5x to see sight and let the target blurr. The reading glasses may not give enough impact protection but I can use oversize shooting glasses over them.Aging is no fun but think of the alternative. :)

How right you are. I do wear glasses with bi-focals and even looking awkwardly through the bi-focals, the site still ain't there. I don't have this problem (as bad) with my other Smiths. They have a wider opening in the rear leaf and I can see a little daylight on each side of the front site but with the 63, it has a much narrower gap and the front and rear sites run together. Not too long ago, I didn't have this problem. It "snuck" up on me.

:) I have two suggestions that might help you out and they don't cost an arm and leg. First use a target with a light back ground. If you are shooting at a black bulls eye the black doesn't let as much light in. My second suggestion is take an old pair of glasses that you have laying around and get your eye doctor to make a lens all of one power for your dominant eye. Don't do anything to the other lens just leave it be. Have him make it so it will focus on the front sight of you model 63. Having a lens made of one power doesn't cost all that much. You will be able to shoot and work on your guns without much trouble. I have forgotten to change mine before and drove home with them. These two things really helped me as I have had the same problem you do. Don

Hmmm...Are ya'll telling me that I can't change the rear site leaf to one with a larger gap? Why not?

Aloha,

I put Bright yellow/chartruse paint on all of my Front sights.

When shooting, all I need is to see the front sight and the rears are sort of blurred.

I buy shooting/safety glases with reader built in. The last ones were from CDNN and cost $6.99 a pair. I also use them for bike riding and as sunglasses.

I would look at having my gunsmith install a set of "XS Big Dot" Sights.

XS Sight Systems - Sights

I don't know if they make them for a Model 63, but you might have a gunsmith make them fit.

Good luck.
