Hi everyone, I just picked up my 15-22 yesterday and I seem to be having a slight issue. I cleaned it and took it to the range, and everything started out great, but after ~100 rounds, I started to have a failure to feed every 10-15 rounds and they became more frequent after that until it was every other round that wouldn't feed after ~150 total rounds. I broke the gun down and checked it over and noticed that the feed ramp was extremely dirty, with large clumps of something on it. I took it home and cleaned it again and tried again today and after ~20 rounds everything was working fine, with no FTF's, but I did notice that there was "gunk" starting to build up on the feed ramp again. I'm using CCI Mini Mag HP's and have never had a problem like this with them before.

I've included a picture that hopefully lets you see what I have going on. It looks like most of the gunk is where the round hits the feed ramp, but there is and was more of it on the rest of the feed ramp. The lines in the gunk are from my finger nail.

I've read a bit about people polishing the feed ramp and I was wondering if that would help. If so, should I just send it in the S&W and have them do it so I know it's done right?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I am not sure if it is something with my computer, but I am unable to see the picture you posted. I have not seen what you are decibing on my rifle. I did notice that when I cleaned it after I bought it, that is was really dirty and had a lot of metal shavings more that usual on a new rifle. I also cleaned and reoiled my mag before using it. I am not sure you did the same with you mags.

Nepodevil, I don't think its your computer cause I'm not getting the pic ether. Just an X
Jack, I shoot Federal value pack from good ol Wal-Mart and I get the same build up on the feed ramp. Every time I go out to the range I put 250 rounds through it with just a few FTF's. So I would have to say I don't think it has to do with your feed ramp. Have you tried different ammo to see if you get the same results?
The only FTF's I do get is due to the mag and thats about one every 3 mags or so and some times I can get all 10 mags off with no FTF's. The round will be standing strate up in the mag. (I think I get in a hurry loading)

Ahh, the wonderful world of 22s. The rounds are dirty. Period.
About the only thing you can do is keep trying to find some ceaner ammo, good luck, and or polish the feed ramp and hope for the best.

No pic, just a red X, so can't see OPs feed ramp.

A large amount of gunk is usually the result of too much lubrication present in the gun. Actually forms a sludge.

Dude that GIF is awesome, good job.

I don't think the feed ramp getting dirty is an issue, the bullet never really touches it on these, at least not on mine. Go ahead and load the mag, and slow feed the round, you'll see the bullets pointed straight to the chamber. It is possible it acts different at full speed, but the gunk is evidence that the bullet isn't touching it. Most guns will build up gunk up over time on the feed ramp, except in the middle where the bullet continually mashes against it and keeps the crud build up off.

Thanks for the replies guys. Sorry about the picture, I've included it as an attachment to this post, so hopefully it works. I've had this problem before elsewhere and have no idea what causes it.

The round definitely contacts the feed ramp when it's loaded slowly, so I'll try polishing the ramp, but the buildup doesn't seem to be causing any issues when I load it slowly. I've just never noticed the buildup on any of my other rifles or handguns.

I'll load the magazines more carefully next time and see if that helps too.

Thanks again, I appreciate the help.

the CCi is coated with wax, would that be it? when the round is being loaded in to the chamber, the feeding ramp scrapes some wax off and leave it there.
