M&P 15-22 Safety alert from S&W

got my go/no go guage today, only 4 day wait. guage is .036, I also own an older one ser.#DTEXXXX and the guage is flush with the bolt face and the top of the bolt.. works for me......also have well over 5000 rounds though it with zero problems

Just a heads up if you're trying to order a gauge online...if you are running an ad blocker, turn it off or you'll just get the spinning thingy on your screen forever!

Received mine today - ordered the day the notice came out. Newer 15-22 (FDE with M-Lok), SN# DFA9***. The guage sits perfectly flush with the face of the bolt. No probs, looking like I'm in the clear..

If the gauge is only 0.036" and the SAAMI spec for .22lr is 0.043-0.051" the guns that have failed must be WELL out of spec!

Hopefully the international orders for the gauge will be forthcoming shortly so we can get back to business as usual. Considering the first UKPSA (UK chapter of IPSC) Mini-rifle Championship is this weekend it'll be interesting to find out if 15-22's have been permitted or not.

I measured the bolt face with the depth gauge on my calipers and got .042" in multiple spaces. So, it looks like I'm ok based on the reported thickness of the gauge tool. I'll still confirm with the gauge tool when it comes in just to be sure I didn't flub up the measurements.

Took delivery of my new 15-22 last week after I read about the latest problem. Figured S&W would take care of it. Anyway, I called in my serial number yesterday (Tuesday) and a nice young lady on the phone said I'd see the measuring device in about a week. Mounted a Vortex 1x4x24 Crossfire II with built-in dot on the rifle last night, needs final adustments, of course, but seems close to being set up ok for eye relief. Rear iron (plastic) sight wouldn't fit with the Vortex mount there, so I'll use the front and rear 15-22 sights on my Aero Precision .308 "AR-10".

Just got off the phone with S&W. Ordered mine on 9 March. No email, etc from them since then. Status: Pending. Just wanted to make sure I hadn't fallen through the cracks. Rep told me "due to an overwhelming response to the alert, we are a little behind on shipments". Fine with me. Sounded like one of those overseas call centers.

Same here. I got .042/43. Will confirm go/no go. But I'll mic the gauge as well.;)

Well, I like to live a little dangerously, so...I cleaned and lubed my brand-new 15-22, unscrewed the muzzle device, screwed on my suppressor and fired off 50 rounds of American Eagle 45 grain suppressor ammo. No problems, misfires. Mine has one of the impacted serial numbers, so I've already called in for the gauge. Rifle works well with suppressor, action slamming around inside is pretty noisy compared to my Tactisol .22LR 10/22 clone.

Is there a list of the rifles that could be affected then :confused:

I was under the impression it was a general alert for all rifles before a certain date, rather than a specific batch.

It is, all rifles before Feb 2019. There is a tool online where you can input your serial number if you are unsure.

:o helps if you read all the way to the bottom of the page doesn't it? ;)

P.S. Mine's one of them with a DFCxxxx number

I just received my S&W go/no go gauge and it measures .036 also. I haven't had a chance yet to check my 2014 HCE, I think I'll use my caliper and measure. Hopefully mine is in the .038 - .039 range. If there is a chamfer at the chamber rim it adds to the clearance of the bolt. The SAAMI spec for a 22LR rim that I read is .043 -.007, which is .036 - .043. I don't think I'd want mine on the super loose side of the spec, I keep my 15-22 clean.

Received my gauge in the mail this morning. Using a Starrett micrometer, it measures 0.0359. I'll check my bolt later today. Oh, no free decal in the envelope. I guess you had to really be one of the first ten to get anything free. OK I just checked mine and the gauge is barely below the bolt face. I'm within spec (well, the rifle is anyway; I'm not sure about me).

Still no sign of the gauge I ordered from the S&W International page. :(

Maybe they've sent batches to their overseas agents and are relying on them for worldwide distribution.

Anyway, as the general consensus is that the magic number is 0.036" for the gauge (many thanks to all you guys for sharing BTW. It's greatly appreciated), and my bolt recess measures in at slightly more than 0.038" (post #73), I'm going to work on the assumption that mine's OK…… tight, but OK.

That is unless any one of you wise folk can think of a good reason for me not to.:)

FWIW, using a digital vernier caliper, I've just randomly measured the rim thickness of a load of CCI Mini-Mag (the rifle's regular diet) and the vast majority come out at 0.0395".

I've also got some of the new Eley Semi-Auto ammo (three types named Force, Contact & Action Plus) that I tried before this all blew up (no pun intended :D) and rim thicknesses vary between 0.0375" & 0.0390".

Before anyone asks though, I'm not going to be buying anymore of the stuff. The Force & the Contact are more expensive than CCI, they're all dirtier than CCI and the groups are no better. Bear in mind that this is what I found from my rifle. It could produce different results in someone else's.

I think I'll just keep a close eye on the rim thickness of any new stuff I try and like a good citizen, make sure I'm pointing the noisy end downrange whenever there's a magazine fitted ;).

Unexpectedly received gauge today (ordered 9 March). Gauge measured .036". About as flush as can be. I must have measured the depth wrong days ago. My recess could possibly be between .036 / .037. I'm calling flush with both a high - power magnifier and dragging a fingernail.:D

No sticker and gluey **** (scotch tape stickum) on one side of gauge. Alcohol barely dented it. Acetone is next. OCD don't you know.

Ordered mine on the 8th in the evening. Showed up in the mail today. Based on past measurement comments and my own measurements, I'm expecting it to be good. If not, I'll post what I find.
