Hi I am new to the group and just bought my first Smith and Wesson M&P 15 5.56. What would be a good scope for the gun. Thanks

Depends on the purpose.. For an all around actual scope, I'd get like a 1-4 or 1-6 or something like that.. I personally prefer a red dot with 0 mag

What he says. I actually prefer a scope with 1X for the bottom number over a dot, but I've got both. Heck, I still use iron sights once in awhile just to keep in practice.

I have read that the red dote is more for self defense. I will get a red dot as well but for now I would like a good scope for the range. What is a good brand scope that you can see your targets really well with at a hundred yards plus

Magnified optic. Look for a good 1x4 scope or a fixed magnified optic like a Primary Arms 2.5 or 3.5 etc.

Whats your budget, scopes range from the $100's into the $1000's.

If your really new and want a good scope with a great no hassle no questions warranty then look at Vortex.

I have a Vortex Viper scope on my SPR and love it, my spotting scope is a Vortex Razer HD and it's also amazing.

On the cheaper side I also have a Nikon P223, very clear glass.

Now if your budget is in the $1000 range I can't help, a scope like that isn't going to help my sport II shoot any better than my $400-600 scopes.

The AR platform is a good gun to use from spitting distance out to about 500 meters. You mention 100 yards plus, but how much "plus" do you intend to regularly shoot?

The Vortex Strike Eagle 1-6x24 is a decent optic that will serve nicely out to 300 yards or more depending on your eyes.

On the cheaper side I also have a Nikon P223, very clear glass.

I second P223, it's a very quality glass for the money.

Also, at 3x it's useful enough for short-range shooting. I can quickly put my sights on a clock across the room.

I like Leupold and usually VX3 level which is middle of the road as far as quality scopes go. I've bought two Leupold Rifleman 3X9 scopes now (I'd say they're like VX1 level?) and haven't been disappointed yet. Have one on a Burris QD mount for my M&P 15 Magpul Mid for range work (ladder loads etc.). It's better than I ever thought it could be - very surprising! $175 at Sportsman's Guide. A red dot sits on my rifle for everything else. I'm not afraid to suggest the Rifleman to anyone, it's that's decent!

It all depends on your style of shooting and your eyes. Myself, I prefer something with more magnification and a larger field of view like a 50m 4x16. I use mine for hunting coyotes and it is easier to aquire and track moving targets with a larger field of view and as big an ocular as possible.
