I would just be careful using a .223 as a home defense weapon. Depending on the construction of your house, if you unload on a bad guy and miss, you could possibly kill a family member on the other side of the house or ventilate your house and kill a neighbor.
5.56 is less likely to over penetrate walls. Its faster than a handgun round. But you are normally looking at a 55-62gr projectile trying to get through the wall. Compared to a slower moving 185-230gr 45ACP.
Ar s being a poor choice for home defence has been proved a myth many times over.
