I am looking for opinions on the M&P 15 PS or PSX rifle. I want a AR piston gun and my choices have come down to the M&P and the Stag M-8. First hand knowledge would be appreciated........

Due to the large response I opted to go with the S&W M&P15 piston rifle! I picked it up yesterday and equipped it with Magpul flip-up front and rear sights, as well as a one piece scope mount for my Nikon 3x9 scope. Stuck a couple of Shoot N C targets out at 100 yards and fired away from a solid bench rest.. All of the shots were within the 9 & 10 rings, with multiple shots in the same hole. My wife shot two magazines and did better than I did and was also impressed. No sight adjustments were made, just stuck them on the rail and tightened them down. I can seldom do better than that using a scope. First time in 50 some years of shooting that I didn't have to spend time adjusting the sights on a new gun. Must have been my lucky day!

Got home and broke the gun down and was amazed at how clean it was after shooting 120 rounds. Next time out I will shoot it with the scope. Highly impressed with my first AR!

Did you put the front site on the gas block?
Any issues with heat and Magpul's 'plastic' material?

TIA

There is a statement on the instruction sheet saying not to mount it on the gas block. That is the only place available on this rifle, so that's where I put it. The salesman that sold it to me never mentioned it, and the disclaimer on the instruction sheet is only readable after you remove the instruction sheet from the package. As soon as I read it I sent an E-mail to Magpul asking them about it...haven't received a response as of today.

I shot about 120 rounds, not in real quick succession, and the gas block did get pretty hot, but the sight seems to have done fine. The mounting screw stayed tight. If Magpul says that it won't hold up under the heat, then I will switch it to a metal front sight.

Lee,
I got the M&P 15 PSX and I love it. I have about 600 rds. thru mine. I noticed when I first got it the gas piston take down was pretty hard to get that knurled nut out. However it gets easier with every hundred rounds thru it. Keep it lubed and it will work great.
Did you take out the gas rod yet to clean it, if so was it a little hard at first??? Would like to know.

Actually it came out pretty easy once I figured out that the pin on the knob needed to be pushed in for it to rotate. I have put about 200 rounds through the gun and have cleaned it about 4 times now. The piston system is so simple and easy to clean.

Did you mount any iron sights? I put a set of Magpul flip up sights on mine and they work really well, but Magpul has a disclaimer saying that the front sight shouldn't be mounted on the gas block. I might take them back and opt for the Troy sights instead.

Lee,
No I don't want any iron sights on the gun. My eyes just don't work on open sights anymore. I have a regular scope on her. If it breaks in a tight situation, I'll just point it at my adversary.

I have a Nikon 3x9 Prostaff on a quick release mount. Works very well and I can remove and remount it without changing the Zero. I might consider a red dot in the future.
