Still awaiting my new M&P 22 compact for nics check. (NJ) but have a question for those familiar, I bought the FDE which seemed to only be available with threaded barrel adapter installed by SW, I have no intension of using it. I'm looking to remove adapter and replace with thread protector. Should I just used the oem thread protector. And apparently I'll need luck removing adapter. Heard cold be tough.

I left my stock adapter in place. I don't shoot suppressed and have seen no need to change out.

Eventually, you'll have to remove the thread adapter to take the gun apart to clean. If possible, lock the slide to the rear, secure the barrel in the jaws of a vice, and try taking the threaded barrel adapter off. If you are lucky it will come off, if not you may need to apply a little heat to the threaded adapter only. Whatever heat source you use, direct it away from the frame.
I had the opposite problem, I needed to remove the standard factory thread protector so I could install the thread adapter for suppressor use. Mine required the passing of propane torch flame upwards and across the end of the thread protector to even begin to get the thread protector to move, it was secured with thread locker compound.

Interesting, mine disassembles with the factory adapter in place with no problem.

The 1/2x28 factory thread adapter is too large for the slide to exit over for take down. Unless they have changed it.

Ah, now I see said the blind man. Mine obviously came with a thread protector, yours is much larger than the device that came on my compact.

I'm thinking of getting a compact 22. Educate me just bit. What is the purpose of the adaptor kit? I mean, it's a .22, how loud can it be? And, I can't seem to find a shop that actually has a compact 22.

The barrel is threaded on the muzzle end. Every one of them.
The ADAPTER screws onto the barrel and is used to mount a suppressor. With the adapter in place you cannot field strip the gun for cleaning because the suppressor thread is larger than the hole in the front of the slide. McKenney's pics in post #5 show an ADAPTER. Removing the knurled nut exposes the threads for mounting a suppressor.
The PROTECTOR screws onto the barrel to ... protect the threads! It's O.D. is just smaller than the hole in the front of the slide and is essentially flush when in battery. It does not need to be removed for field stripping.

Don't use flame. Buy yourself a heat gun. They are available from Harbor Freight/Lowes etc.
