Hello all. First post here.

We just purchased an M&P 22 for my wife after renting one a couple of times at the local shop.

Took it shooting last night. When loaded with 12, the first round fires but does not eject. Happens pretty consistently. No other FTFs or ejection failures; just that first of twelve rounds.

We had noticed the same thing happened a couple of times on the rental gun we used a few weeks ago, but chalked that up to the rental.

Anyone else have a similar issue, or any suggestions.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the new gun.

The problem could be several easy to fix things, but it's most likely ammo related. What brand did you use?

Also, did you clean the excessive grease out of the gun before using? Other possible causes include improper gripping (limp wristing), a dirty chamber, or stiff/new mag springs. You could fully load the magazine(s) and let sit a few days to limber-up...

I fired my new M&P-22 for the first time today and experienced the exact same thing. Nine times out of ten, the first round would not eject.

I was using Winchester 555 (36gr HP). Didn't have anything else with to see if it was ammo related.

Thanks for the suggestions. We were using Federal bulk ammo. It worked fine except for those first rounds.

Yes, the gun was cleaned of grease and nothing was dirty. It was not limp griping, because it happened to my son and I as well.

I'll try the loaded clip trick to see if that helps.

Mine too, but after break in of around 1K it settled down. Had one incident the other day, seemed like the rim on the un-ejected round was a little thicker. Maybe the extractor can't grab some cases. Very few occurrences though. .22 ammo has it's quirks.

If it's only the first round that is causing this issue, I have to wonder if ammo really makes much difference. I never had a FTE after the first round in all of the mags I shot today.

I only shot full magazines, so I'll be interested to see what happens if only two rounds are loaded and will have to experiment with that the next time out.

Same experience here. No other FTEe and no FTFs. I did try two mags with just ten rounds and the first round did eject on those. Seems to be a problem when loading the mag with twelve.
Didn't try eleven rounds in the mag.

I'm stumped. Can't think of why only the first round would not eject, yet the remaining rounds do.

Had a similar issue when mine was new too. It went away tho. I chalked it up the the full mag, and springs not being situated. And as someone else stated, the cheap .22 ammo can be finicky. Just to be expected. Doesn't bother me tho. Just glad to get to shoot it!!!!

Sounds like a tight mag spring as some has said. I would also try CCI ammo in it. Their ammo is more consistent and guns with weak extraction do better with their slightly thicker rim.

Mine did the same thing....but after about 300 rounds...she is smooth as silk. Keep shooting...she will come around. Like most ladies....just takes some time for them to warm-up.

Are you sling shotting the slide forward or using the slide release ? That could also be the problem (being it's new and not fully broke in yet). Sling shotting the slide gives it a bit more umph when stripping that first round and it might be you need that little extra to get the extractor over the rim just a bit farther on the 22 case being the mag springs are also new and stiff.

Mines broke in and eats any and all 22LR now. Loves Federal the most and I stick with copper coated 22 over plain lead. Also try to stay with above 1280 fps ammo for best results and clean it (barrel and chamber). Hoppes #9, swabs and a brass brush.

Makes perfect sense. Can't recall mine doing that, but that does not mean it didn't.

Mine does it too. Here's my better half at the range first time shooting it.
First round of every mag is this way. Very few rounds through it at this point and the slide release is used to chamber the first round. Will try sling shotting it to see if that makes a difference next time.

First Round Fail to Eject

I shot my first rounds with new M&P22 yesterday------first mag first round---no eject, first round 2d mag no eject, first round 3rd mag no eject. All Winchester 555
Reloaded all three mags---2 with Blazer, 1 with Stinger---all 3 worked fine

Reloaded all 3 with Win 555----all three fired fine

Seems to be mag related--new mag setlling in. I had to take mags apart when I received the weapon because they were dripping in grease and oil. Maybe they are sensitive when reassembling

I forgot to clean the magazine when cleaning my 22. But she worked perfectly. Did not have the feeding issues described here.

Thanks for all of the replies and suggestions. What a great community this is! Glad to be here.

I'm also kinda glad to hear that others are or have had the same problem. Not wishing misfortune on anyone, but glad to know it's not an unique issue with our gun. We'll try the sling shot slide closing the next time we're at the range. I'll update this thread with any new developments.

First thing I do with new mags is fully load them if I'm going to the range the next day next week or next month, leave them loaded.. My new Mags stay loaded till they are good and settled in.. I shoot Winchester white box 555's and had no issued broke her in with Mini Mag's 100 rounds of 40gr SP and 100 rounds of mini Mags 36gr HP all worked fine.. But leave new mags fully loaded. Make sure there clean too, dirt or grit in them can cause a fit.. I also lube my slide inner rail and center where the hammer slides on with Remington spray can oil with Teflon and I give a small shot to the hammer and frame rails put her back together and work in the slide a bit then wipe her down a few times as needed.. I use the same lube to clean my mags and I believe this stuff helps with the speed of the feed!! Good luck! George

I haven't experienced the issues you've described. Before shooting my M&P 22 for the first time, I spent a bunch of time removing the copious amounts of packing/protective grease in the firearm. The grease was a milky color of vaselene consistency. I then disassembled the mags and cleaned them too.

I lubed the firearm per the instructions found in the owner's manual. My only deviation was a very light coat of Red Shooter's Grease on the rear frame rails and corresponding slide rail slots.

I know that .22lr's can be ammo sensitive during break in. I brought 300 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags with me to break in my M&P 22. I fired 100 rounds of CCI without incident, and transitioned to Federal Bulk without incident.

I am stunned to read that fellow forum members are experiencing this issue. I've tagged this thread because I have friends who are looking to buy an M&P 22.
