Ok Picked up the M&P 22 6-29-2012 and had had it sitting on my coffee table all this time. Cleaned then same day as I got it, got rid of all the factory grease I did spray it down with rem. oil aerosol with Teflon let sit wipe dry pry-er to gun oil and assembly. cleaned and lubed it per manual except for one drop of oil on the hammer cock rail in the slide and one drop on slide inner rails along with the manuals one drop of oil on each side of the frame and one drop on the barrel. For over a month I tried to figure out why we picked up a plastic gun in the first place. Ok so I fondled it some raking the slide a lot but not letting it slam home to battery. I think that helped to really smooth it out. It started to feel realy smooth. Had 3 mags loaded as well for a month. I couldn't take any longer and had to take it down the range yesterday 8-9-2012.. Well What I found. I set up 7 small bulls eye targets on 8X10 paper at 10 yards,30 feet. My front site completely covered the black bulls eye of the target so it made it hard to make a hit in the black 9&10 ring in a spot I wanted too.. First mag was just a little high and looking at the target to the left 11:00 none in the black next target another mag better some in the back.. When I got down to my last few targets groups and placement 9&10 ring hits were the norm. Whit the last target I put 3 mags in the black.. Front sight a little big but still a Good shooter. I found the gun to mimic a full size M&P in more was then just size.. Gun was a bit louder then my other 22's and recoil was a bit more too, I'm a big guy 6' and 204 lbs.. This was the only 22 gun I could feel the difference of weak rounds and not just hear it. cci mini mags were strong with a fair amount of muzzle flip. Surprising to me for such a large 22.. Good trainer for the larger cal. guns!

Issues. 1. 1 round of cci mini mag had a failure too fire. I checked the firing pin mark on the round and it looked good nice and deep so I think it was the round. Shot 250 rounds. 150 of cci m mag and 100 rounds of Remington lightning bolts.. No other issues.
Fit to my hand.. I may need help here! I'm not use to this type of gun I shoot 1911 .45 most of the time. I have large but not meaty hands and when I grip the gun if I get the web of my hand up to the back strap of the pistol my trigger finger is on a slight downward slant to the trigger. If I stay 1/4" or so away from the back strap feel is better but control is not. Also grip was a little slippery for me in hot humid weather.. Any suggestions for fit? I'm 55 with glasses and do have to push the gun away a bit more then I like to see the rear and front sight with the target. Some of you guys know what I mean it's a balancing act to acquire the sights and target keeping gun level.. Instinct works well for me as I have been a shooter for years..

OK sorry this is so long.. I did make a post My M&P Rant!
Before even shooting the gun.. I know this was not fair to the gun but as I said I'm a 1911 guy and can only compare quality and workmanship with the guns I have..

First take down after 250 rounds impressions!
Bottom of inside of slide exhibits some scratches where the hammer drags on the hammer slide to cock it.. going over that place with my finger I can feel a slight chattering wear patten starting but hope it clears it self. I plan on keeping watch on this and dress it if need be. On the inside of the slide I also found some ware on the inside inner rail just the other side of the S&W logo on the left side of the gun. Just a small patch.. I could not see what was causing it..

Also with just a guide rail on the back of the frame I see that the barrel and guide rod do have help in keeping the slide in alignment to some degree.

I think time will tell.. If I can get 25 years out of it. I will be happy. I know for some of you younger shooters 25 years sounds like a lifetime but believe me when I say it just a blink of a eye..

Any help as to my grip ? Or how I may hold the gun better would help.. I tend to hold it like I do on other 1911's But I like thumb down off the safety left thumb over right left fingers wrapped over grip fingers..

Any worries concerns with the wear? anything I should do different with this type of gun as far as care oiling maintenance goes?

Also after a little more shooting I will take down or recant my post " MY M&P22 Rant " and try to make it right I don't feel anything I said was wrong but the internals still may be adequate for this gun.. Sorry for any type o's or anything else I may have made in my post.
Thanks George

Hey, George, glad you finally got you gun out to shoot. I was having a similar problem with the grip, this is what I used.
http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-wesson-m-p-pistols/259152-x-tream-grips-m-p-22-a.html This is a post that I did earlier. I got the rubber texture and it went from a good grip to a great grip especially here in Texas where your hands get hot and sweaty and it looks good too. The Talon grip tape with rubber texture is also popular on the gun, either one would give you a better grip, I just liked the looks of the Xtream grip tape better.

jsalas, Thanks! They look good. I think your gun looks like it came out better then the ones in the picture from the url you posted for me.. I'll see if I can get some local to me.. Hows the inside of your slide wearing? Next time you take it down to clean yours if you could before assembly take some close ups of the rear of the inside of the slide where the hammer is cocked and slide slides on also 1 shot of the face of the hammer.. I would like to compare wear.. But ya in any case it's a fun gun to shoot very actuate at 30 feet. Going to try and get it out again early next week. Sights were great right out of the box. If this gun will last I will be impressed with it.. Thank you for replying to me post! George

If it is worth anything, I have maybe 100 rounds through mine and will shoot about the same tomorrow and will look where you mention and take pics.

Paul, Yes that would be great! Thanks! If some others with a higher round could could also do the same at there convenience I would appreciate it.. George

Some pictures after today's 100 rounds. I stopped there as I ran out finally of my 17 year old Remingtons! Nothing felt rough. Just looked like normal wear but i did have three FTF. I think it may have been bad ammo though.

Paul, Thank you!! If you can send some of the under part of the slide the back half after it's clean that would be great as the wear seems to be more here..If you got it back together already the next time around would be fine.. But from what I can see your frame seems to be doing real good so far. As is mine on the frame. The inside of the slide seems to be taking more of the wear on mine.. Thanks again! George

George, here is a photobucket link to the photos that I took, too many to post. If you need more let me know. Just doubleclick on the pic you want to see to make it full size.

jsalas2, Thanks! Everything on your frame looks really good to me.. Could you take a few pictures straight down of the under part of the slide. Your slide rails are normal and looking good.. I would like to see the rear part inside the slide where the hammer drags against.. Thanks again! George

jsalas2 and Paul, Thanks so much for posting. That's just the shots I needed to see. Wear looks fine on both your guns.. I have 250 rounds through mine and am going to put through another 250 through it and see if mine improves. I'll get down to the range this week. I'll let you know how I make out and what things look like.. my wear marks do seem more like a chattering wear "when I rub my finger over the under part of the slide "where the hammer slides on" not a nice smooth mark like both of yours but maybe I just don't have enough rounds through it.. I'm cleaning and lubing well after each use. Fingers crossed! Thanks again for your photos it really help me see what mine should be looking like.. George

Glad we could help. I heading to the range tomorrow too. I've got two boxes of Federal bulk. Gonna do one full box for sure. Have fun.

It's all part of break-in and normal. Doesn't hurt to keep an eye on things, but don't get/be overly paranoid about it. I do clean mine after I shoot it. 22's are ALWAYS dirty reguardless of the brand and the barrel will lead from the softer lead in 22's.

I DON'T play "master blaster" (as in shooting 50-100 rounds as fast as I can load a mag in the gun) and do keep a reasonable eye on the barrel temp. as not to get it overly hot. I DON'T "baby" it by a long shot, but I don't "beat" it either. Depending on how much I'm shooting. If the bullets start wondering on the target,I'll clean the barrel with a wet swab and bore brush it with Hoppes #9.

As for wear. Take care of it like any weapon and it WILL last a lifetime.

jsalas2,
Hope you have fun at the range and get in some good shooting! My range is tied up till at least 12:00 they shoot trap from opening time of 9:00am. The keep shooting past 12:00 most of the time till the last person is done.. There good as they will pull trap even if there is only one shooter shooting and till there done. This means for a iffy Tuesday for Pistol and rifle shooting. I got a Blue box of Federal 525 bulk and a box of Winchester White box 555"not wildcats" Both hollow point bullets 36gr copper washed Box said plated.. See how they will do.. Again thank you! George

Maddmax, Thanks for the input! Yep going to keep it clean and lubed after each use. I figure it has the best chance at a good smooth break in that way.. Nope I don't use my pistol like it has a hand crank. Only have 3 mags I take my time.. Most of the time I'll run into someone and we get more talking done then anything else but it's all good..M&P 22 lasting a lifetime! I don't think so IMO anyway.. But then again I never did warm up to the Glocks " I know there also a great gun "just personal taste" and knowing plastics do have a age limit. I picked this M&P 22 to try and warm up to the new wave of guns as I'm a all steal 1911 type of guy. But I'm coming around slowly... George

Range time should be fun and relaxing. I always like "trading notes" and general BS'n.

As for the "plastic" life... Remember the old Remington Nylon 66 22 rifles from way back ? "We" had them back when we were teenagers and a couple of my friends are teaching their Grandkids how to shoot with the same rifles we had as kids. Just be careful what you clean and lube it (M&P 22) with. Some lubes and cleaners ARE plastic killers.

I was (still am),an old Colt 1911 steal guy. Still have and use them. Even CCW my old Commander now and then. But times change and so do the weapons. I have six CF M&P's and wouldn't trade any. I've had zero problems with any of them, all are great tack drivers. Bought the M&P 22 for cheaper shooting and it gets better the more I shoot it and has gotten less picky about what it eats.

Maddmax, You know your right about that nylon stock! I do think nylon is forever! Ok you go me. You got my attention! Please list the cleaners I should say away from on a polymer based gun? Also if you would list some good and safe cleaners and lubes to it.. I have been using Hoppes #9 bore cleaner forever so I use that for th ebore and heavey gunk. I also use Hoppes gun oil plan orange container non aerosol.. plus I like to use Remington Rem Oil with Teflon in aerosol form after everything is clean I spray down the all that metal with it and let it sit for 10 to 30 mins then wipe it down followed by steps per manual for oil plus I put one drop on the hammer slide "inside the slide" and one drop in the inside of each rail on the inside of the slide. I didn't see any cleaner or lube that said it was safe for polymers or not to use on them. Not sure I'm spelling that right. Thank you for your help and input! George
