M&P 22 finely out with it. First Shoot! Review

Maddmax, You know your right about that nylon stock! I do think nylon is forever! Ok you go me. You got my attention! Please list the cleaners I should say away from on a polymer based gun? Also if you would list some good and safe cleaners and lubes to it.. I have been using Hoppes #9 bore cleaner forever so I use that for th ebore and heavey gunk. I also use Hoppes gun oil plan orange container non aerosol.. plus I like to use Remington Rem Oil with Teflon in aerosol form after everything is clean I spray down the all that metal with it and let it sit for 10 to 30 mins then wipe it down followed by steps per manual for oil plus I put one drop on the hammer slide "inside the slide" and one drop in the inside of each rail on the inside of the slide. I didn't see any cleaner or lube that said it was safe for polymers or not to use on them. Not sure I'm spelling that right. Thank you for your help and input! George

Normally,I stick to the off the shelf weapon cleaning products made for weapons and stay away from ANYTHING industrial strength not made specifically for weapons (esp. when it comes to ANYTHING polymer). I've used Hoppes #9 and never had any problems and all the lubes that have been made for weapons. Best thing is read the labels first.

I DON'T use WD-40 on ANY weapons. The problem with industrial lubes (grease, motor oil,grafite...) is time and who knows what additives (and in what strength) have been added to them. You won't know they did any harm until it's too late and the damage is already done.

For instance...Gas engines in the "old" days, you could add 1/2-quart of transmission fluid to your motor oil (acted like a super detergent),run it less than 100 miles, change oil and it would clean all the gunk out of the engine. Engines got newer and started using synthetic timing gears and other parts. Doing that to the newer engine would take out the synthetic timing gear in 500-1000 miles. Just like don't use gasohol in anything with a plastic tank. It slowly eats the plastic and gunks up your fuel injection system.

MaddMax, Thank you! Ok looks like I'll be ok then I only use gun specific products, have for years.. Thank you! George

Hello all,
Well made it down to the range this AM with through 300 rounds on Remington Lighting Bolt ammo. one had 1 issue and it was a weak round failing to strip a round from the mag. Pulled the trigger and just heard a click. Slowly pulled back the slide and nothing was in the chamber. Only enough power in that round to cock the hammer.. Other weak and odd reports but no other failures of any kind.. Targets were grouped well nice and tight with most rounds in the 9and 10 ring of a 8x10 target at 30 feet with lots of 3 and 4 round touches, nice! liking this gun more and more now! Went out to 75 feet and got 6 out of 12 in the 9/10 ring! Very happy with that as the front sight covers up most of the target at that range! Kind of instincts guessing and luck with my progressive glasses.
Took gun down to clean and the wear on the under part of the slide that cocks the hammer and then rides on the hammer now showing no sign of the chattering wear pattern that the first 250 rounds produced. nice and smooth now.. Wear on the left side of the slide rail is heavy looking but suspect that this too will come ot a head and cease in time.. Any thought on using gun rail grease on this gun? I may try some if I see it, as it's not a defensive weapon for me. Just trying to save on some wear. So not a high round count 550 total but function seems to be great so far.. I know There is much better ammo out there and I have some cci mini mags. But for now I'll use them if the gun is needed for some kind of defence situation..G

Ron, I didn't get mail yet today but am expecting your package in it.. Then maybe I can see better when I get them done. George

Sounds like you and your gun are doing fine. Only one problem using Remingtons is really good!

I would think the package is still a few days out. The USPS is fast, but we are talking about traveling about 3,000 miles. I'm in Oregon. My guess is Monday. :(

About the front sight being so large, I have found that by using 9" paper plates for targets, I can place the sight on the plate so only just the sides and top are visible. This gets me just about dead-center POI on the plate. This at about 10 yards.

Thanks!! I'll give them paper plates a try! Don't matter how long the package takes I'm in no rush... Starting to love the gun.. I'm getting there! I have 3 mags think I'm going to see if I can get one more really cheap somplace.. That would really round it off good.. Funny this is the only gun I can mount a laser on cheaply as it has the rail on the bottom but i don't think that really makes any sense to me for a 22. What do you think. Can any use be made of it.. There about $20 bucks catalog ordered. George

Don't worry about wear. You are still breaking the weapon in and "break-in wear" is normal. I'd skip the grease George. It'll just collect more dirt, dust and grime from the 22 ammo making it gritty. That can make for more wear in itself. Stick with the light coat/drop of weapon oil like the manual says.

And don't worry. You AREN'T going to wear out the weapon any time soon. It will last way longer than you can imagin. It's not a cheap "throw-away".

Skip the laser. For $20. you aren't getting much (more than likely, just a piece of ****). Spend the money on ammo,a new mag or paper plates. You'll be WAY ahead.

Maddmax, Ok going to keep the lube I'm using and not worry about it.. Ya I know the laser was cheap.. Ok going to pass on that too! Just going to enjoy what I have for now. Just need 25 or 30 years out of it I think. Thanks! George

I'm betting it will do all of that and then some. 99% is in the owner and how well they take care of their weapons. I have original weapons that go back to the sixty's and shoot and look as good as the first day I bought them. If I didn't think the M&P's were up to my standard I NEVER would have waisted my money on them (not to mention S&W backs them for life). I'm also betting our M&P22's will out last us and well into the next generation(s) they are passed down to. Have faith.

Maddmax, I'm trying! The more I shoot it and clean it I'm looking it over for wear or other issues.. I clean it if I use for one shot or 500 rounds. I'm strictly speaking about the Walther made M&P22 here.. We have a M&P .45 on the way but being a S&W original product I don't think there will be many issues with it..Oldest gun I have is a Beretta auto mod. 1935 in .32cal dates back to 1944. All steal gun though maybe 25 parts in the hole thing. very simple like a 1911 also have a old Mod 71 in .22cal from 1959 still looks and works great, I would trust them to function flawlessly if my life depended on them along with my other Smith & Wesson's.. . Love that.. Different beast though all steal I have no issues with my steal work horses.. I think well cared for they could see hundreds of years, Beretta has been around for over 500 years . 1911's made it past 100 easy.. I just need a little time to adjust to this new wave of guns.. But I'm getting there! Thanks it all helps! George
