Have been looking for a M&P 340 for several months...why are these so hard to find? Are they still in production?

And I thought guns were hard to come by only here in Vegas! None of my dealers has seen a 340 since early last summer. They seem to be a popular item, being the Centennial configuration, ultra-lightweight (lighter than the similar 642 in .38) and chambered in .357. Can offer no info on factory production.

You can usually find 5-10 of the various 340 models NIB on GB at any one time but at the major online gun shops they come in stock and go out within hours or less, my LGS has had a couple come through in the past 6 months and sold out the same day. If you want one, your best bet is to sign up for back in stock notifications on the various online shop sites or buy one from GB.

I find the M&P 340 not a handgun I care to shoot .357 magnum with. Even 3-4 cylinders of .38 +P exceed my pain threshold. Have you shot a M&P 340 ? Are all the J-Frame revolvers is short supply ?

Even if one does not wish to fire .357 Magnum ammo from a 340 M&P, the front night sight and DLC black coating make it worth acquiring (IMO)

I've owned one, and the black coating is MUCH different than that found on the 442 or other "black" j-frames.

I loved the front sight, the "medium" dot sight, from XS sights, is very quick to acquire in low light.

I'm on the prowl for another one myself, but yes, it will be carried with .38+P ammo.

Thanks for all of the information. The reason I choice the 340 was that I have had several 642's over the years and always ended up selling them. I recently decided that I was going to get one more J-frame that I would be with me until the end. After some thought, I choose to get a top quality model with a decent front site to go with my 351PD and 351C. Anyway, after doing some research I decided that the M&P 340 would be a perfect companion for my pair of 22 mag's (which I love by the way)

Thanks again for the feedback!

As I am not quite ready to buy at this moment....

Here is a link to a NIB, NO LOCK 340 M&P, for the best price you will likely find:

S&W 340 M&P J Frame 357 MAG NS 5 Shot LAYAWAY : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

Better hit it quick!

Wow, that's a good price for a no lock 340. Unfortunately there was no such think as a no lock when I got my 340PD, but I fixed that issue. I bought mine eight years ago slightly used for $500. Great carry gun if you will practice. I have been shooting some sort of J Frame since the early 70s. If I didn't have this one I would jump all over this M&P 340.

So I was sitting in line, waiting to pick my daughter up at school, when I came upon this thread via Tapatalk. I have a 642 with CT grips, but I have a hard time picking up the front sight quickly, particularly when practicing in low light. I have been thinking about picking up a 340 M&P, because it has a much better front sight, but haven't seen a non-IL version in my area. I want to thank wheelyfun66 for pointing out the one for sale on Gunbroker--it is now sitting comfortably in my front pocket! You guys are a great community and resource!
