Hey all. Picked up a spare SS cylinder for a m&p 360. It has quite a few nicks in it. And needs some love. How and what can I do to make it look newer again besides sending it to s&w. Thanks!

Assuming it's SS, personally I'd remove the finish and go with a matte SS finish. Easy to do yourself, and easy to clean. If you wanna go with black I'd sent it back to S&W. Many people will tell you to do some other kind of coating, but I don't have any experience doing that so no opinion there.

Yes the SS. How do I ge it to the matte SS? That sounds intriguing.

Glass bead blasting will do the trick. Make sure that the beads are clean and not used with anything other than ss or alum as small particles can become embedded and rust later.

Good luck.

There are many ways to go about removing the factory or other finish to get it to matte. This is what I've done before:

* Disassemble the cylinder
* Let it soak overnight in Hoppes/Break Free Powder Blast, this makes starting with a clean cylinder very, very easy.
* 1000 grit sandpaper, use until the finish is gone, anything finer than this you will begin to polish it, waste of time if you want matte.
* Wash it with water and soap, dry it thoroughly.
* Depending on what kind of matte you want will depend on what you use next. There are a couple of different kinds of 3M/Scotch brite pads that at this point will give you whatever kind of matte you'd like.

Or, you could have the cylinder blasted and you'll get a matte finish very quickly. This isn't free though and I personally don't like having any part blasted unless it has to be.

Yea I don't have access to a blaster. I'm actually puting the cyl on my 360pd. Can I pick up the scotch brite at like Home Depot? I'd like to almost match the orig ti cyl finish. Or at least close to it. What pads would I be looking for for that. Thanks!

You can get the Scotch pads from Home Depot, Lowes etc. I recommend buying a few different types, try them and see which gives you the personal result you're looking. They're not expensive, and if you do use Break Free Powder Blast wear some kind latex style gloves. You can get a 10 pack for less than $2. It's very powerful, you don't want it on your hands, I know.

Will do. Thanks!
I didn't get cyl yet tho. Be here in two days. Just going off the sale pic. I looks pretty well used. But I'll see how it looks in person. If finish bad enough I will try the matte finish. Thanks again!

Car parts stores sell the synthetic sanding pads in all the various "grits", for prepping and polishing painted finish. Might have more variety than a hardware store/lumber yard.

Yes, this is correct, I should have thought of that. Check there first and be sure to feel the pads. Also, take a similar metal with you and try it, as long as you don't have to open anything or alter the packaging.
