This may be a dumb question but I'LL ask anyway. I just purchased a M&P 40 and when I load the magazine to the full 15 rounds the mag will not lock into position. If you remove one shell then it will. Is this how the gun is made to function or is there something I'm just totally ignorant about. Thanks for any help.

Load from slide lock and you don't have to compress the magazine spring that extra 1/2 a cartridge diameter. This is the preferred way of loading a semi-auto.

The spring will loosen somewhat as it breaks in.

If you administratively load from slide lock you need to remove the magazine, top it off, and reinsert. You're right back from where you started with "hard" insertion -- the original concern.

Just smack (not tap) it into position!

If you "smack" an M&P magazine hard enough, you can acidentally release the baseplate and even dump the whole mag contents. I've seen it done on the range. Magazines should be pushed firmy with the heel of the hand.

I don't understand why you "need" to remove the magazine and "top it off?" Load a 15 round mag from slide lock and then there are 14 in the mag and one in the chamber.

Pg 17 of the M&P factory manual cautions that if you top off the magazine, extra care is needed to make sure the magazine is fully seated, including trying to pull the magazine out by the baseplate. A partially seated magazine typically falls free of the gun after the first shot, which is very amusing for everyone except the shooter.

The 40 is rated 15 + 1 which means 15 in mag and 1 in chamber, Push a little harder and carry a fully loaded pistol.

I took my follower out, removed about 1/8th inch from the bottom, replaced it and it worked just fine after that. I suspect the bottom of the plastic follower is hitting bottom. I won't advise you to do this. You are own your own with it. It worked for me with no problems.

If my pistol did that I'd be looking for a different pistol.

Just push on it a little, mine was the same, with the slide back it clicks right in; but with one in the chamber you have to put just a little pressure to it and you will hear a click. If you can't pull it out with slight tug then it's in there.
