This is the spring from a new-to-me police trade-in M&P 40. Looks like the front half has been dipped in green paint. Anybody know why?

My last two M&P 9's Full size springs were blue so I assume paint is for parts ID at S&W ,also .40cal and nine use same spring what size pistol do you have ? Maybe it is to show the builder which end is to be installed don't know.

From what I gather early full size 9mm and 40 used the same blue coded spring which I believe was 15 lbs. . Later, S&W went to a heavier green coded spring for 40 which I believe is 17 lbs.. My later Gen 1 police trade M&P40 originally shipped in 2014 had the green coded spring and just recently I got a new RSA from S&W. It too is green code.

Long ago our lead armorer was told that the paint was for parts identification at the factory. We received RSAs with yellow, blue and no paint. All the parts lists I've seen since 2006 list the same recoil spring assembly for both 9 and 40 full size.

I believe that those yellow coded springs were for the 4" compacts based on seeing pics of them in other 4" models.

As other have said, I believe it is for Identification on the assembly line.
My 2008 M&P Police trade in came with a blue spring. The replacement that I ordered about 2015 was also blue, and was marked for a 9/40/357sig. My M&P40c came with a yellow spring.

FWIW, Looking at spare springs for my Gen3 pistols, the spring for my 6906 has a green tint, and my 5903 looks like a straight forward brown/blue steel. It may mean nothing on them, but is interesting.

I have a new 2.0 5" m&p pc ported 40sw that has no paint on the recoil spring . Now going back a few years when I asked about recoil spring weights I was told the new full size run 18lb springs so I ordered some glock 18lb and 20lb ismi spring as they are the same springs and both our old 4.25 9mm and 4.25 40sw run fine with mild standard loads or underwood hot loads . When I called about my new 5" 40 no color spring it took awhile to ask someone else and I was told it was a 16lb spring !? So I'm waiting on some springs now . I'm an old 1911 guy that use to matching spring to a load . I'm also not sure what the heck goes on with s&w when you ask questions .

All of the recoil spring assemblies I’ve purchased for my M&P .40 have blue paint and were rated for 9mm, .40S&W, and .357 SIG.

That might be the reason s&w stopped making the 357sig version years ago . To light a recoil spring cause many issues for LE back in the day !! Unless all you shoot are pop fart loads try an 18lb glock spring . M&P is 17 or 19 for some reason .

The Blue for the fullsize supposedly works for 9/.40/.357. As you can imagine, that means it will cycle the weakest 9mm. Now shoot some stout .357sig. I can image the slide slamming. The Green ones are specifically .40 so they may work better for .357 as well.

The 1.0 Compact (and 2.0 Subcompact) have Yellow as the 9/.40 and Brown as .40.

If you look at MidwestGunWorks, note that many of the parts that actually do fit 9/.40/.357 have dropped .357 from the description except for 3rd party parts and magazines.

It is not just S&W. Springs are commonly marked with colors for all kinds of products

Except for my 40sw 5" were some one was to lazy or stupid to paint the spring !! I know heavier 18lb springs work in the 9mm well and a 20lb spring in my old 4,25 40sw .
