M&P 40 to 9mm conversion?

I fail to understand the fascination of 9mm barrel in the 40....if I need a 9mm I buy a 9mm...

On more than one occasion I have seen fellow USPSA/IDPA competitors come to the line with the wrong barrel... or more correctly wrong ammo for the barrel in their gun!

I know...(it's like having two guns in one)....might work for you but not me..

Why spend upwards of $500 for an M&P9 when you can do the same for $140? (what I paid for the barrel, 2 mags and 2 holsters). On top of that, what if you decide you didn't like 9mm. You can get closer to what you paid for in the parts than you would in a depreciated no longer new gun.

My whole reason for starting this thread was finding an economical solution to my problem. Clearly, growr has no such concerns. I only wish I could have a gun for every need. Thanks again for all the input. I will be picking up a 9mm barrel and mags as soon as I can come up with the funds.

I like to expose my non shooting friends to shooting. I start them off with my M&P22 then move them up to my M&P40 with a 9mm barrel in it. This makes their shooting experience much more pleasurable.

Also, after my wife had been shooting her M&P40c for a while she developed a flinch (anticipating recoil) so I got a 9 barrel and some mags. She's worked out the flinch and now enjoys shooting 9mm more than 40. I spent about $75 for the barrel and about $60 on 2 mags, so I'm into a second caliber for $135. That's a lot less expensive than buying a new gun.

As for loading the wrong caliber, we have made it a habit to always check the magazine and barrel before inserting the magazine into the gun. ALWAYS!

I have both the 9mm and 357sig StormLake conversion barrels.
Today was my first day shooting the 357sig, and it was a lot of fun.

I put 50 rounds through the 357sig, 30 rounds through the factory 40, and 30 rounds through the 9mm barrel.

I did get some 9mm magazines, but the 40 and 357 sig use the same magazine.

I had zero issues with any of them, although last time I took my neighbors and his sons, they had a few issues horizontal stove-pipes. From what I have read, it was limp-wristing on their part. One solution would be a slightly reduced weight guide-rod spring.

Here is my setup:

I just got notification from Midway that the Storm Lake 40 to 9mm conversion barrel for my M&P 40c is available. I should have it by Monday. My reason for wanting the 9mm was because I just started reloading 9mm and I like to test my work before I let someone else shoot it. It was more cost effective to get a barrel and a couple mags to use in a gun I know works well rather than pony up the $$ for another M&P. I purposely ordered the stainless barrel so I know what caliber I'm set up for at a glance.

I have a stock 9mm barrel on backorder for my 40c. For $65 (plus a magazine), I can shoot the most commonly-used pistol caliber in the world, in a high-quality pistol that I like. It is a cheap contingency for ammo shortages. I probably won't shoot it much. I plan to test it and put it away for emergencies.

I really might spring for a Storm Lake 357 SIG barrel. That caliber is very interesting to me, after seeing chronograph results from a Glock 33 with a barrel length very similar to my M&P 40c. He was getting velocities 1300-1400 fps with various factory 125gr ammo. That is most impressive from a 3.5" barrel. Accuracy is generally reported as quite good with Storm Lake barrels.

I have had the Storm Lake barrel for my 40L CORE for about a year now. It has never given me a problem except when I use low power reloads. So I ordered a new spring (Blue) to replace the green one that came with the 40. I suspect I have 3K rounds of 9MM through it and it shoots every bit as well as the 40. The price between 9s and 40s isn't much, but I like the idea of having an option to shoot major and minor without any difference in my equipment.

The Storm Lake 40 S&W to 9mm conversion barrel for my M&P40c arrived yesterday from Midway. I put about 150 rounds through it today. 3 different 115gr hand loads and WWB 115gr RN. Flawless drop-in conversion. A 9mm factory barrel would reportedly do just as well ($65 S&W vs $165 SL:eek:), but I was too impatient to wait for one.

Im new to thie forum, so thanks in advance for what may be a tyical "newbie" question. I read a bunch of reviews on the Storm Lake 40 to 9mm conversion barrels before ordering one. You see a lot of conflicting information about feed/eject failures ranging from absolutely none to something like 1-2%. The ejectors for both rounds are supposedly the same S&W part number. Has anyone had feed or ejection problems using the Storm Lake barrel and 9mm magazines? Thanks.

I recently bought an M&P 40 Pro with the 5 inch slide. I also bought a Storm Lake 40 to 9 conversion barrel. The conversion barrel worked fine with factory ammo (Blazer Brass 115 gr. FMJ) but I had numerous failures to extract (both horizontal and stovepipe) with my reloads. I returned the barrel to Storm Lake with some dummy rounds that were giving me trouble. They sent back what appears to be a brand new barrel. I still have the same problems shooting hand loads as before. I suspect that they are less powerful than the commercial loads and that I may need a weaker recoil spring. In several posts I see references to a 15 lb. blue recoil spring which is supposed to work better with .40 to 9 conversion barrels. Where can I get one of these? My gun came with the green 17 pound recoil spring.

picked up the Storm Lake 40 to 9 conversion barrel and it looks very nice . also 2 - 9 mm mags for use with it .. will pick up the 357 sig barrel when I find a good price for it. Pistol should be at my FFL tomorrow some time ..
