I'm looking at buying an M&P 45 with 4" barrel. It would be a range and home defense gun. I'm a big fan of both pistols and revolvers in four inch. I like the caliber and the 10+1 capacity. Any thoughts/comments on this particular pistol are appreciated.

The mid-sized M&P 45 is a great choice for a range/home defense pistol. Mine has been as reliable as they get and accurate too. It's a fun gun to shoot.

I'll pile on, the 4" M&P .45 is a great carry piece. Basically the same size as a G19 9mm.

I've owned and shot 10+ 1911's over time, still have about a six-pack of them, along with a Sig 220, G21's & 30s and the M&P is by far the best out of the box .45 I've ever owned.

Just picked another one up to try an RMR sight on, should be good to go.

I've never fired the FS, 4.5", but am happy to keep the mid-sized. YMMV, but maybe not .

Better get the 4.5", since semis measure barrel to include the chamber, the 4.5" would be closer to a true 4" barrel.
But I might just be biased, I have 3 4.5's. I like the longer length to accommodate my weapon light choices.

I have the 4.5" with a Crimson Trace laser grip and rail mounted light. I am very happy with this setup.

I have the FS M&P 45 also; not 1 single complaint from my end! My personal preference is also a 4" barrel on most of my other handguns (revolvers/semi-autos), but I actually prefer a barrel length over 4" on a 45 auto. The FS M&P 45 compares favorably with my Ruger SR1911 FS/5" in accuracy. The 1911 (stock) still shoots slightly better groups, but a 1911 is a totally different format than the M&P. My M&P 45 is also stock and is a 2007 model.

Range/Home Defense/Personal Defense-yeah the M&P 45, IMO, will do you right! :-) Enjoy!

I would strongly consider the 45C, which can use the full size 10 rd mags w/ the X-grip adapter. It essentially is the mid size (same slide and mag capacity) AND give you a better carry option in the compact configuration. Having a 45FS and two 45Cs, the 45C can easily be converted to either the 45 midsize with the aforementioned 10 rd mag and adapter or a 45FS with a spare slide, 10 rd mag, and adapter.

IMHO the compact(S) is the best of both worlds but I am prejudice since that is what I own, I use my weapons for self defense and DC. Since I am not a collector or competition the compact is the most versatile automatic for my needs.

I've made a few comments about my 45fs. Over 8k rounds on all stock everything still other than the recoil spring. Shot just about everything you can through it and not a single hiccup. But I've since changed to the 45c because I wanted something a little smaller. So my friend has the fullsize but thinking about getting it back since I can't suppress the Compact

Keep an eye out for full size slides. I have one set up with a threaded barrel that slides right on my 45C frame.
