To anyone who has the full size M&P 45 with the thumb safety, how is it with the safety-do you like it? I'm thinking of buying one and the only way it is offered is with the safety.
Thank you, Bob

I had one. Great shooting gun but the detent on the safety was not very strong. I found that it could be very easy to flip the safety on with out knowing it. Also it is on both sides and if you want to put Crimson Trace grips on it you would have to have the left side lever cut off.

I liked the gun a lot and would own another if S&W made the detent a bit stiffer.

Bob------I bought an M & P .45 without the thumb safety, without the mag disconnect, and without the internal lock 7 weeks ago--------they are available, you may have to ask your dealer to order one that way. I believe it is the finest combat semi-auto I have ever owned!

The thumb safety doesn't have too much travel and is easy to deactivate. It seems like it isn't very useful. Of course a friend was letting me shoot it at the range, so I don't know how it would work in the real world.

I agree with Chris K... find an M&P without the thumb safety. Its a redundant system made for people who think about such stuff... not for people in the real world.

Been on two tours Iraq [CW2-6/17CAV] and we love the M&P .45. But, a safety always turns on at the "partytime" moment. Don't need it. Thankful mine doesn't have one. The govt issue M&P does have the safety.

I don't think even law enforcement would prefer a safety because its either holstered, or the officer needs to save a life... right now. A quick, centered shot is what he needs, not fumbling with a safety (an officer comment here please).

Fine gun and takes the dust well (like talc). Points naturally and hits 'em hard. M&P is latest generation and the best design. Set out to beat the other plastic guns in reliability and feel. Looks like it does.

I never worry about the wolves here in Alaska carrying my M&P. Funny... they feel my confidence.

Here is my 45 with safety next to my compact 9mm. All the safety does is block (red) the rearward movement of the trigger bar (blue).

It really doesn't lock firmly into place like a 1911 or H&K USP.

Just curious, when did the army start issuing Smith M&Ps? What is the FSN, I would like to look it up?

Mine is individually purchased but there is limited issue. All of the issued ones have the safety. There are some in armory here at Fort Wainwright. I'll find out the FSN.
