M&P 9c mag' follower/catch problem

Good evening,

I bought a new M&P 9c, which has a problem. I've searched this site under several parameters but haven't found anything.

The problem I have is that the magazine follower doesn't engage the tab on the slide catch. The tab lands to the left of the follower, which holds the mag' in place when empty. When the mag' is inserted into the well and seated I can push the follower down and to the left and it will move under the tab but as soon as I release pressure it pops back off.

From what I can see it looks like the tab that protrudes from the slide catch "yoke" (not sure what the proper part description is) wasn't bent at the rear flush to the yoke and therefore doesn't protrude far enough into the well, nor at the right angle to engage the follower. Additionally, the follower in both mag's tilts away from the tab.

Does anyone have any experience with the problem? What is the cause and how is it fixed? I have contacted S&W and they have emailed saying that an RMA is pending but I'd like to know more before I send it back in.

I've attached a picture of the problem.

Thank you for any help or insight.

I have the same issue. Let me see if I can find the previous thread.

Note to the moderators. Is it really necessary to censor other forum URLs in a Private Message?

I find that rather shocking. The recipient was left with a URL filled with asterisks.

my M&P 9c locks back on the last round being spent. its manufacture date is Feb 2013

just pulled mine out to look. It looks like yours, pretty much when the magazine goes in that lever catches the very side of the plastic on the mag and causes the slide lock to be pushed up.

Try giving S&W a call. I'll bet they'll send you a new follower or spring/follower assembly or tell you how you can throw a quick fix to it. Is this happening on just one of your mags?

The slide locks on every instance I've read about. It's just the slight pressure on the follower that keeps the magazine from ejecting freely when the release is pressed. If the follower was just a tad wider this wouldn't happen.

By the way, new followers purchased from midway didn't help. The follower that arrived in a third magazine that I purchased from another forum member does NOT have this problem because it is slightly wider where the slide lock rests on it.

I haven't tried getting new followers directly from S&W. Oddly I think that the mag I bought from a forum member is older than the mags that came with my 9c.

I have a 9FS manufactured in January 2013 and a 9C manufactured in March 2013. Both seat exactly as you describe with an empty magazine. The slide lock tab is just left of the follower. When I seat an empty magazine, the slide lock tab moves upward as it hits the metal magazine corner. When I seat a magazine with a round in it, the slide lock tab is positioned over the follower. I'm no gunsmith, but I believe this positioning and movement of the slide lock tab causes the slide to lock back when the magazine is empty as well as exerting downward pressure on the magazine for easy magazine drop.

Update: I forgot to say that I have not any problems with either pistol with this configuration.
