Today I went to the Range and shoot off a few different guns and one of them was a M&P 9mm full size. I found that I like the way it felt in my hand not so much recoil and light. I haven't shot the M&P 40 yet but wanted to know what was a better gun? I'm looking for carrying, home defense, and range... I'm open for all types of other suggestions also.

HD = M&P45FS
Range = M&P9FS
CCW = M&P Shield 9mm

My hands are kinda to big for the M&P shield. I held it and just don't like it all like that.

I'm an unapologetic 9mm fan. With modern self defense ammo, there isn't much difference between calibers, especially on the receiving end. There is however a difference on the shooting end, and economically. 9mm has better recoil characteristics, which translates to reduced muzzle rise and time back to target. The rounds have a smaller circumference, meaning the same space holds more rounds. The ammo is typically cheaper per round everywhere in America.

Nothing wrong with the others, but they can't make those claims. I have other calibers, but the 9mm guns are the defense guns (short times where I'm likely to see 4 legged adversaries more frequently that 2 legged ones.)

Sounds like you are a prime candidate for one great do it all pistol,
the Beretta 92FS 9 mm.

While I'm a huge fan of the Beretta 92 series, that's one hell of a big, bulky gun for carry. We're talking 34 ounces empty, then add in the weight of 17+1 rounds of 9mm.

If you wish to use it for a home defense gun, I'd note Beretta makes a 30-round extended magazines to control numerous and/or stubborn pests.

I haven't had a chance to hold it, but I looked at the stats online. With a grip under 0.9" I just don't see it fitting my XL paws.

A lot of people get really hung up on the caliber, like mention before with quality self defense ammo there is not significant difference to really matter. What really counts is rounds on target PERIOD, 99% of top instructors in the country use 9mm and there is a reson for that. I rather have a 9mm that I practice with often than a 45 that collects dust in the safe because of cost of ammo but in the end any caliber is a good choice as long as you can handle it.

First question where are you? Does your state have magazine capacity restrictions? In Colorado the 15 round .40 magazine is legal while the 17 round 9mm (technically) isn't. Which is more available? When I went through this process I couldn't even find an M&P .40.

Even with the magazine issues I went with the M&P9 (apparently quite a few gun shops in Colorado Springs are ignoring the magazine capacity restrictions) but I think your best bet is to shoot both side by side (maybe more than once) and then decide

Don't Laugh At This...

I have owned several MP's. Currently own a 45 mid size and a FS 40. Owned a Shield at one time, but sold it. Fine gun, but just a tad too small a grip for my hands. Shot a lot of .40 in my time. Mostly through a Glock 22. Ugghhhh (Work mandated). My department then allowed us to carry our guns on our dime. No problem. Went to that MP 45 for 4 years. Great gun, but only 10 round mags. I have read all the recent studies on ammo and performance. Fine. Bought an MP FS 9mm. Shot it.. and just could not bond with it for whatever reason. Ok... stayed with my 45 but still had concerns with 10 round mags on duty. Found a FS MP 40 on a LE trade in and bought it. Shot that 40 and OMG wow. Night/Day compared to that Glock. Just a fabulous gun to shoot and hardly any noticeable recoil like I had with the Glock. So the long and short is this.. guns are like girls and they all kiss different. Some kiss ok.. others knock you over with that OMG what was that.. Shoot what feels good to you. Its that simple. And train to hit what you shoot at!!!

You might consider the M&P 40 FS and its best kept secret: You can buy a M&P FS 9mm barrel (and magazine) and shoot 9 at the practice range and run the 40 for SD / HD.

But that's not all! You buy a .357 Sig barrel and you can shoot that bad boy with your 40 S&W mag.

So, three guns in one. You can't lose!

OP I think you can take this to the bank.

Not sure how to define a "better gun" to satisfy all the experts out there, but I really like both my M&P 40 Pro 5" and M&P 40 compact. Recoil is snappy but not a hindrance to accuracy or sight recovery (practice at the range makes a difference :)). Since your hands are large, probably a full size frame would be better. I carry either one very comfortably in a King Tuk IWB holster. The compact with its shorter grip just disappears under a shirt left untucked. My height is 5' 7" and I'm small framed.

I prefer 9mm. I have a FS, Compact and Shield. All great.

I also have a M9A1. Love it but it is too big to CC.

So my 2 cents is the Compact. Caliber of your choice. Has interchangeable grips to suit your hands. Take full size mags for more capacity if you live in free state.

I would recommend the compact in either 9mm (my personnel choice) or .40 for a carry piece.

I would recommend stepping up to a pro, or possibly core, model for a range gun. Once again I personally choose 9mm but if you ever plan on getting into uspsa shooting the .40 has an advantage. The pro 9 mm is the perfect gun for idpa, best all around if your a lefty in my opinion.

I'd save a ton of money and buy a LEO trade in M&P in .40 for about $340 (CDNN has a few) and then buy a 9mm barrel for it if you want 9mm.

You could also pop for an Apex and still be under the price of a new M&P.
