My humble suggestion to a newbie (was one myself a few short years ago) is assuming the new gun is not a .22, then yes you can pick up a mag loader (Uplula). After that, spend your time and $$ on ammo & practice, perhaps some lessons, and learn & use proper techniques to get some confidence and competence.
As experience builds then consider what else you may need or want; also ties to what you plan on using the gun for. Such as carry, range toy, home defense, and so on.

M&P9 accesories
Thanks to Ranger27 & SmithNWesson for useful tips. I will pick up the Uplula mag loader. I'm just beginning to be able to load the mag by hand and will get better with practice. I think my wife will use the loader.
I have the glasses and muffs. What cleaning kit and range bag do you recommend?

Uplula works fine. Someone at the range got away with mine, so I replaced it with one of these cheapos. Comes in many colors... Works just as well!!! $8.99

A few years back I probably wouldn't have given much thought to a mag loader, but seems like tendonitis has found a new area to bite me - my thumb. If you're going to shoot a lot, that might be a good investment. For anything else, I'd first look for someone in your area offering quality handgun training for new shooters. A good instructor showing you how to perform the techniques correctly to begin with saves a lot of otherwise wasted ammo trying to do it yourself. Depending on what what the pistol is going to be used for, extra magazines, holsters, belts, and sights should come next, but only after you've gotten some help getting started. I will back up a bit in that if the range kit came with a holster, you might want to acquire a decent sturdy belt from which to support the pistol. Having all that in hand before you go to attend a class will made the whole experience a bit more comfortable. If you don't want to spend too much money, get a 5.11 1.5 inch trainer or operator belt (I don't remember exactly what they call them...) Best wishes!

Great Post. I will be taking at least one class. And when I get to this aspect later in the summer, will look into this belt and also look for a holster.

And while I'm still dispensing advice, I should tell you that while I hope your new M&P runs 100 percent reliably, always remember that S&W's warranty service is excellent. If you experience any horrendous problems beyond what might remotely occur during break-in assuming that you're keeping it properly lubed and shooting decent ammo, all it takes is an email to customer service and they'll send you a shipping label. I think that is the most expedient option to getting your gun back up and running if it breaks, and doesn't cost you anything,
My PPQ's came with a mag loader. Works OK but not as good as the Uplula. My Uplula works on all of my handguns including HK, SW, Sig, Beretta and even my single stacks (Shield, 1911s). A definite "must have" IMO.
Otherwise, lot's of ammo, range time and a few classes are all you need.

Hoppes is a good brand for cleaning kits.
As far as bags go it really depends on you. I prefer backpacks and am eyeing a S&W M&P backpack.. A little pricey but i have gone the cheap route and regretted it.
Have you cleaned your gun yet? Check out youtube for some tutorials if you need help. I've learned a lot from youtube, just be careful...one video i saw had a guy over lubricating his gun

When I buy a new gun the first accessory for it (if a semi-auto) is at least 3-4 additional mags. Then come a holster. I think everyone else has covered all of the other bases pretty well.

That is a great resource. I will buy there. However, I was confused because the dealer offers 3 different versions (at 3 different prices) of the M&P9 9MM 17 ROUND MAGAZINE. Two offerings say "full sized" and one doesn't. How does one choose which magazine to buy?

If your M&P is the fullsize (4.25 inch barrel) then you need the fullsize mags. Some places may not specify since 17 round mags are full size. There are reduced capacity mags (15 and 10 round) for restricted states but those just about always specify. You slide should read M&P 9 up by the front sight.
The M&P9 Compact says M&P 9c up by the sight. These too generally specify Compact. Full size mags will fit the compact, just stick out a bit more. Compact mags will not fit the full size.
Finally, the Shield will also say so up by the sight. Shield mags will not fit the full or compact.
Here are the three of them all together.
(and yes, there are FOUR lights!!)
