Is there a way to tell what gen barrel it is just by appearance?

I know a gen 1 won't work in a gen 2 but will a gen 2 work in a gen 1 or can it be modified to work?

According to Brownells the barrels between the M&P 1.0 & 2.0 are interchangeable, as has been my experience.

As to the OP's original question, there is a different (wider and visable) cut on the 2.0's feedramp, but that doesn't effect the function, again, in my experience. My aftermarket 1.0-era 5" 9mm conversion barrel operates in a 40 S&W 2.0 longslide.
