M&P Bodyguard 380

When I got my BG in Dec of 12 it sort of took pushing the release button to seat mag. Totally unacceptable to me. I looked it over and figured that just a little force would work.

I pushed the mag in just a bit faster and harder than I was doing a few times and low and behold it goes in quite easily now. FWIW I'm well used to rapid mag changes in my 1911 when I was doing lots of combat shooting and used about the same amount of push. (My sons BG was the same and the little applied force worked fine on his also)

I really wish the BG was available without the laser as I feel in this little gun it is a superfluous item. This gun is for fast/ close point& shoot save your butt occasions. Saving a few bucks for a none needed piece of fluff works for me.

They are out without laser. See my post above.

I am wondering if the frame will be available to swap out on the older models I would prefer not having the laser also!! Does anyone know if this will be accessible??

Yesterday I got the new Bodyguard 380 and went to the range today - no shoot. Easy to rack, but the shell is not fitting properly - then a tough job to retract the slide. The range master had the some problem, so I took it back to the dealer - same problem Well, it is on its way back to S&W. The mag was very difficult to set - even when slamming. Maybe this is part of the problem. How many weeks will it be before I get my gun back?

Picked up mine on 2/26 and I love it. Not too crazy about having to depress the magazine release to insert a magazine, but I overlook that.

Glad I held out. Not a 1911 guy so even as much as I liked it the P238 was out. I thought I was going to have to settle for an LCP.

BOY, am I glad I saw your post! I just picked up my new 380 today and while checking it out realized the mag won't go in unless I depress the release button. I can see where it is hanging up and, not being the type to fly off the handle, I was ready to box it up and back to S&W you go. I don't know why its that way, but if it is normal I can live with it.

Happy shooting,
Dave

I have the same issue with having to depress the mag release button to insert the magazine. I also have the old BG380 and do not have that problem. Magazines look exactly the same between old and new. I tried old mags in new gun and still needed to depress mag release. I tried the new mags in old BG and all went in without depressing button.

I hope this is not the way it was designed as in an emergency I do not want to be fumbling around with the release so I can insert a new mag. I am going to call S&W this afternoon to see what they have to say.

Hi guys,
I HAD the same problem with my new M&P BG until I took it to the range yesterday and ran 100 rounds through it. Not sure what happened but it's good now. My guess is the mag release just needs a little use before it works. If I take out the mag and look up the mag well from the bottom, I can see the mag release button. It looks like a piece of plastic with a piece of metal wrapped around it. When you insert a mag into the well, the edge of the mag hits the plastic portion of the button. Where the two meet, I now see the plastic part of the button has rounded off a little allowing the mag to slide in without pressing the button. Works great now.

I took a bad picture but hopefully you guys can see the part I'm talking about. You can see the slight rounding over of the plastic mag release button.
Bob

I ended up emailing customer service because the phone wait times were long. They replied late yesterday asking me for my info so they can send me return info. They would like to look at the gun.

Ran about 50 rounds thru mine today
Thats about all I could take

You have to stand across the room to pull the trigger.
Man its LONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Im thinking I have to have the Galloway kit when they are back in stock
On another note gun shot flawlessly NO FTF or FTE
I am really happy about that
Gun feels good in the hand, But I will have to get another mag extension, the one mag is flat, it was harder for me to shoot

I have to agree with rwd above. I think the little plastic looking part just needs to used and broken in. I think part of the problem is that the 380 mag doesn't have a lot of taper at the top and it catches the "plastic thing" and doesn't allow it to slide down and catch. I cleaned mine the other day and it still catches a little but nothing like before. I was just afraid to really smack it good and have the catch break. I would run a few rounds thru it before you send it to Smith. I think that maybe having to push a little harder would outweigh having the freeking mag fall out in a gunfight!
Keep us posted on your situation.

Thanks sarasdad, I was apprehensive to send it back. I thought about filing down the catch, but may just play with it awhile and see if inserting a couple hundred times will make it any better.

I picked up a new one yesterday.Have run 100 rounds through it with no problems. The magazine can be seated with out using the release button. Also,if you happen to have an old trigger shoe laying around from your revolver days,it certainly helps with the long trigger pull.Feels like it cuts the effort needed to shoot it in half.

got one today serial#KPK

got one today.....traded my BG380 with laser in for the non-laser version. the trigger feels lighter ,I'm told it's 10.5 lbs. now and i believe it feels that....the old one w/laser had a horrible12-14 lb trigger.
the slide is stainless steel now w/melonite finish. i like the M&P subdued dark lettering w/no white outlines anymore
the old one was carbon steel w/blued finish/white lettering
the new one is a little heavier .....must be the stainless that =more weight?

On sale last weekend at Cabelas in CT for $339, $379 for the Bodyguard with the laser

Just handled one at my LGS. Trigger was a beast. I am leaning toward the LCP. He also wanted full retail for both. I will buy on line and save $100.00.

the new trigger is better

i had the BG380 with the laser and the trigger was a beast(14lbs)
the new one is a big improvement, 10.5 lbs and smoother.
you might have tried one of the old ones
