Do you think S&W will come out with an improved or second gen M&P down the road? sort of like the changes to the Sigma line or do you think we will just see running changes and or upgrades to the line without a model change?

They've sold around three quarters of a million pistols in about 3 years. Doesn't appear that change is necessary. There have been some product improvements, but they've been minor things that become apparent when large numbers of any product are in use. Examples are slight changes in the recoil spring guide rod, striker design and slide stop spring.

Well, my crystal ball is out to the cleaners, but what the hey?

The early SIGMAs had trouble both legal and technical that the M&P does not, so if you want an M&P, I'd go for it now. They have a good selection of models for carry and competition.

I don't see much on the M&P series that needs to change (other than one chambered in a 10mm). The M&P series has a natural grip, great trigger pull, and is very accurate.

Love my FS .40 and Compact .40. Do a Burwell trigger job and you are good to go.

I agree with firebirdV8, this is an excellent platform, not much room for improvement.

It would be great if they continued to make different versions. Like a 10mm!!!

I would love to know what you feel needs to be improved. The M&P represents in its current form most of the technologies and features that you would expect in a state-of-the-art assault pistol.

This would be a great question for the Glock forums.

Where are the latest assault pistol features there?

gglass ....... It's not that I feal that it needs to be changed I like the pistol and all I was just wondering if small thangs change do you think it will be called like "M&P MK2 or something or will they just keep small changes quiet. I would think from a marketing standpoint a new model/upgrade would help sales if the product gets stale after say 5 or 10 years without change.

And 1911 pattern pistols have been in production how long???????????????????????

They have introduced the L and Pro models for those folks who like to play games with their guns.

Yes the 1911 has been in production a long time and has gone threw some changes along the way but the 1911 also did not have the problems going in like the M&P. Not that I think the M&P has many problems I just think we might see small changes/improvments as the line goes on.

Ah, but the 1911 started life as a different model. Changes were made before and after the troop trials. The A1 series changes were made in 1927, and a firing pin safety device was cancelled due to WWII. Many people see the 1911 as it's made today and mistakenly think that's what they looked/worked like in 1911. An average trigger pull on an honest to JMB 1911 went around 7 lbs, I've seen them approaching 20 due to improperly machined hammers. I've got one that came out of the Colt factory in 1913, I bought it in as issued condition and worked on 1911s for decades.

Also bear in mind that the 1911 didn't see the production numbers of the M&P for decades. To say that the 1911 didn't have some issues is not true. Heck, in the 1980s Colt was infamous for selling pistols that didn't work when NIB.

Everything made by man has had production changes/product improvements. I expect the M&P auto series will be the same.

The changes will be in frame color, maybe custom back straps or "tactical" and "elite" models.

THe simplicity is the key. it's a good solid gun with little to go wrong and even less to correct.

messing with it too much messes with the selling points.
