M&P extractor thread size

I have a M&P serial number S852509, which has a extractor problem. I have everything cleaned and would like to chase the threads into the extractor. Best I can determine that the thread is 10-40, 10-42 or 10-44. Under magnifying glass, I "think" I count 11 threads in .250 using measuring tools.

I anyone knows for sure what it is that would be great. Innerweb and AI is all over the board on what it is. AI thinks its left hand thread, which it is obviouslly not, LOL.

And, anyone know of an outlet for a tap set that would include these, that would be great. Pretty pricey individually.

The newer ones are #10 - 48 Left Hand. Presumably, that one would be #10 - 48 Right Hand. You can get #10 - 48 RH taps and dies at www.victornet.com. Look under Special Pitch in the tap and die sections.

Why do you "want" to chase the extractor threads? Are they damaged, or maybe just tight. If the extractor rod can be screwed into the extractor without undue force then leave it alone. If you are not absolutely sure of the thread size then leave it alone too. Even only being off two TPI with that fine a thread would destroy the threads in the extractor.

The revolver was probably never cleaned, but was not very dirty, but had dried up oil or grease in all the parts that wouldn't have been wiped clean over the years.

When I got it, you had to push "real" hard with your thumb to get the cylinder to release. And, I mean real hard. I examined all parts and cleaned them as best I could, however, can't see inside the extractor to see if any grease is in those threads. Anyway, the center pin was rough as a cob for some reason and I polished it up some and it works alot better. When the extractor is threaded onto the extractor rod, it threads easy until near the end and then it starts to thread hard and never really stops. And that leaves it a bit long, which contributes the the release problem.

It's better than when I got it, but not like it should be. I am going to chase the threads to clean them up. My theory is the tap was wearing out in the assembly line and I got the last extractor threaded before they changed out the tap.

I'm pretty sure I will be able to tell if it's the right thread count when I get it. Not my first rodeo, just my first S&W extractor.

Update 5/5/2026

Bought a 10-48 tap and gave it a try. I am not sure what exactly was wrong, or how long it was that way, but the extractor, extractor rod and with the extractor rod collar should all thread up tight. Mine didn't. It got real tight but never would close up the gap. I chased the threads, but that was not enough, so I then cut a little bit and tried it. I had to do that three times until I got it to tighten up. When I got it, it would work but you had to really push hard on the cylinder release, and pull really hard on the cylinder to get it out. Now it works normal. 80-100 years old, who know what happened or whether it's was that way from day one. Anyway, thanks, fixed.
