I was looking at M&P autos and several looked as though they had internal locks. On closer inspection it looked as though the key hole was plugged. I asked the guy behind the counter and he said that they were plugged and there was no key in the box and no internal lock. Is S&W making one frame and plugging the key hole not installing the lock on some and installing the lock on others?

The short answer is, sort of?
My M&P9c (W/O thumb safety) of late 08' production has the port for one, but has a roll pin in it's place. The manual with the pistol, has pictures indicating that any/either could be expected to be encountered. Lock, no lock and no port? My understanding from other Forum members is that of the "latest" production frames many are coming through W/O the port. And seemingly ALL thumb safety models, do not have the port? So, that's why my answer "sort of".

None of the .45ACP versions even have a provision for the lock. Perhaps S&W is going that way with all of them now since the manual safety is no optional across the line. I hope so, perhaps its a trend that will make it way into other parts of the company's line.

M&P40c comes in 4 configurations. One has the lock and the other three do not. Below is a copy/paste straight from the S&W web site.
