Just acquired a M&P post war revolver 1 7/8" bbl, .38 spl, RB, serial number S9565XX.

Probably will not get it until Friday or Saturday. Seller says he thinks it was made in 1947. The "bible" gives a pretty broad serial number time frame.

Would appreciate any help on pinning down a more definitive
DOM. Thanks in advance for all of your help.

It very likely shipped in November, 1947. I show a bunch of 2" examples in that serial range. All of them that I have a ship date on left the factory that month.

What is interesting is that all of the others had the square butt, including one at S956543, which has to be pretty close to your serial number. Would you kindly let me know the rest of your serial number, so I can include it in my survey? PM it to me if you prefer.

BTW the 1 7/8" barrel is nominally called a 2". Actual measurement is as you stated.

Please post pictures here in this thread when you have the gun in hand.

Housepuss,
I have the same revolver with serial # S9625XX. The same reliable source that just gave you the ship date for yours also gave me mine, and both guns were likely in the same shipment. Congratulations on finding your copy!

Edit: My M&P Post War snub is a square butt with high horn magnas numbered to the frame. I was posting from memory and in a hurry yesterday and the above info is not correct! Here is the correct info regarding my gun. It came to me with a Jinks letter dated 2/5/99 which states the gun was shipped from the factory on December 16, 1947 . Mr. Jinks also called the gun a "Pre Model 10" in his letter, which it is in one sense of the word. The transition had not been made, at least on my copy, from the long action to the short action. C serial numbers began in early 1948, and I understand all of those had the "new" short action. I am always open for correction!!

Sounds like a nice snub nose... one of my favorites.

I think Jack is spot on regarding the ship date.

I’ve got a square butt snubbie, s/n S948308 that shipped on October 15, 1947 (one of a two gun shipment)

Just a quick correction to my original post. I stated the revolver was a RB, well.........since I have CRS, you know.......can't remember s--t, or at least that what my doctor says it is, frankly I think it's mad cow disease, anyway it turns out it's really a SB. Complete serial number is S956543.

I've got another M&P from what is suppose to be 1949. It's a 38 spl, 1 7/8" bbl, RB Serial number C201821

You guys are teriffic, all of your information is so much appreciated.

Thank you! Very helpful. As noted above, this one was already in my database. It is possible the seller got the ship date from me.

The last time I saw it, it was wearing stag or faux-stag stocks (I don't remember which).

That one probably shipped in 1952. I don't show any with numbers that high that left the factory in 1949. It would have the high speed hammer, of course.
