This one was delivered this morning. Have been wanting to pick up a 6" pre-10 with S prefix serial number, so when I "found" this one, I ended up with it. Serial # is S 985256, guessing 1948. All numbers match, including stocks. It has a lot of dings and scratches, but is nice and tight and really doesn't look too bad. Should make a nice shooter.

Hopefully, JP@AK will check this and be able to add to his data base. Can you get me any closer to the ship date Jack?

Very likely shipped in March or April, 1948. I show one very close by serial number that shipped in March, and several on either side that shipped in April.

Thanks for the new info!

I don't very often see post war 6" barrels.
I have two or three in my collection, but they certainly don't appear as often as the 4" and 5" examples. With more than 1,000 listed in my database, my current calculation/estimate shows about 10% of production went to the 6" barrel category.

Jack: per your request here is photo of 5 inch M&P mention above.
Grips # to the gun.

The M&P is interesting in the following way:

Although it (along with the legions on model 10's which came after) is probably the most common handgun in the world , I NEVER get tired of looking at them , in real time and on this forum.

Nice catch , Charlie.
