M&P PRO Question

I recently purchased a new M&P40PRO. I am new to the M&P product line. I want to be sure it is functioning as designed and have the following question.

When I insert a mag with any number of bullets, but do so quickly and with "reasonable" force, the slide automatically moves a bullet to battery without me needing to release the slide lock or manually slingshot the slide. If I insert the loaded mag more gently, I am required to release the slide release which is actually alot stiffer than I would have expected. This seems to be an advantage for me to have the slide automatically chamber a bullet without the need to conduct another slide release step....especially for IDPA. However, I want to be sure this is a designed operation and not a problem with my new weapon. Does anyone know the answer to this question? I have two other semi handguns that require me to release the slide in order to chamber a bullet regardless of how hard or fast I insert a loaded mag. I kind of like the way this M&P Pro functions in what is almost intuitive, even though I suspect it was engineered mechanically. In fact, I like S&W M&P's so well I have an M&P22 on hold at my local gun shop until next week. They just fit me so well. Thank you very much for helping to address my question.

I have a couple M&P PROs and 4 regular M&Ps. All of the full size models do that, the 9MM sub compact doesnt seem to do it. I am a NRA Instructor and have seen sverl other M&Ps do that also. From what I understand that is ok dont worry shoot it and enjoy big time

This is the normal behavior on my M&P9 Pro. If I insert the loaded mag with a bit of force and at an angle the slide will usually release. However it's not guaranteed and I wouldn't want to bet anything critical on a somewhat random occurrence. ;)

My experience also but your slide release is not a slide release it is a slide lock, which means that it is not for releasing the slide,

There has been a shift in training, shooting and competion in which you roll your hand over and use your hand to break the slide contact with the slide lock lever by pushing back and releasing the slide

The idea behind that is that the shooter only trains and practices one movement ever. so the same movement is used to clear a bad round, load the chamber and so on. There are some vid's on Utube on training that way,

Years ago we were all putting long slide locks levers so we could use our thumb but the experts came along and changed that

Good point...Thanks.

I have a brand new 9mm pro with a 5" barrel. Mine appears to do the same thing. Is it a consensus that this is ok? Anyone think it is an issue? Thanks

This is common with the M&P pistols. My 45 will do it every time for me, but wouldn't do it for my friend. It will only be a problem if the slide fell and didn't chamber a round.

I like this "feature".

I called S&W customer service this morning. Their Rep was fully aware of this and said it is intentional. As another post indicated, the rep said the pistol was designed for LE. I guess it makes sense.

My M&P pro 40 does the same thing. It also seems to be very sensitive to magazine springs. I had to change one of mine already because it wouldn't lock the slide open at all and I don't leave them loaded and I have had it less than a year. I think the slide lock doesn't lock very well. As long as the slide locks open when the magazine is empty it doesn't bother me.

Some of the older automatic Smiths do that as well. My 659 does it.

That phenomenon is known as "auto-forwarding". My FS9 does it and it bothers the **** out of me. It does it "most" of the time, but not always. Very distracting.

Does anyone know how to fix this? I thinking of taking a file to the slide stop notch to make it more squared off.

My M&P 9 Pro goes to battery if I slide a loaded mag in hard- does it every time. Neat feature.
