I am not too familiar with the M&P pistols but my LGS has both a M&P 9 and a M&P 9 Pro for about the same price. Other than the longer barrel which I do not mind, is the Pro model the better deal?

The pro comes with competition sights (FO front and blackened rear). It also has a factory trigger job. Lastly, if memory serves, it came with an extra mag. (not 100% on this last one so check) . That's easily $200 + in some very desirable upgrades, I'd buy the pro hands down if you are looking for a do all/range gun. Love mine!

Definitely get the Pro. I was in the market for a Pro before I ran across a smokin' deal on a Sig P229 SAS. The M&P is still on my list, it just got delayed a bit.

I have a M&P Pro 40 Cal the trigger pull is sweet this is one of the best shooting guns I've ever had.

I compared both and opted for the FS 4.25", stock #209301.
As far as I know, the Range Kit is the only product to come with a third magazine.
By the way the Pro is available in 4.25" or 5" barrel.
I added a Apex polymer trigger, DCAEK and Trijicon HD yellow sights to mine.
Dollar for dollar I think it came out close to an out of the box Pro.
I would say the Pro actually would be less costly, given my experience. I haven't seen any evidence the Pro uses any different parts than the normal pistol, other than fitting by the PC. From what I understand, all M&Ps use the performance center sear. But that may just be the internet rumor, I don't honestly know.
I still prefer the Apex poly trigger vs. the hinged S&W original, and I'm extremely satisfied with the trigger action now with the Apex parts. I do like the Trijicon HD sights. It was between them and a set of Truglo TFOs. I opted for the Trijicon because of their reputation. I got the yellow because I am slightly color blind and I find yellow easy to pick up.
I'd say overall the Pro is excellent value and a fine pistol.
My 0.02, good luck with your choice.

my first pistol was a shield 40, my 2nd was a pro 40. it shoots like a dang cadillac.

If you can get the Pro for the same price, I'd go for the Pro. (seems somewhat strange that they're selling them for the same price) If you ever think you're going to want a reflex sight, then I'd look at the CORE version of the Pro, much easier to mount an optic. That's what my thoughts were. I've put 30K through my CORE and I'm finally getting around to putting an optic on it. (for steel challenge, my old eyes are starting to have difficulty picking up targets quickly)

I like the pro myself.
I want a 5" Pro in 9mm! I am selling another striker fired gun to get it. With the children's bathtub developing a leak last night, my hopes of getting the Pro might not pan out. I will keep hoping though.

I would love to, but I had to quit my job do to health reasons. Not having the extra $ sucks!
Still working on getting healthy. Three procedures and one surgery down.. Not sure that I will be able to go back to work when things "settle down". I have intestinal disease and it did not like it when I worked. I believe I came close to being hospitalized because of it. My hemoglobin is improving, so that is good. In a 6 month period in '05 the husband lost his job, a family member died, the eldest daughter's boyfriend was killed in a car accident when I was back east for a funeral. The husband got a job. Had a weekend to buy a house in the Kansas City area and we had to sell the house in So. Cal. Moved to Missouri where we didn't know anyone (we had 30 days from job offer to when they wanted us here).. The intestines were fine during all this.. Working to earn extra $, I started having issues after a year. Ignored the issues for a few more years, I am now paying for it. I guess working was a different kind of stress. I could always "earn" extra $ by going out on disability but I hate to do that.
Sorry for the rant.. Sometimes I get bummed about not having the extra $$.

I put a nice thick layer of silicon over the crack and after that dried, I put a layer or two of Gorilla Tape on top. I will still need to replace the tub though.. It is a whole bathtub + walls and ceiling unit. So basically we will have to redo most of the bathroom. At least the bathtub will no longer be yellow.
