If you go to their website it compares the Critical Duty and Critical Defense. The defense is specifically for barrels less than 3 inches. It has to do with the powder load. The Critical Defense is supposed to reduce recoil.

Critical DUTY is better in full sized guns, but it is also specifically designed for much better barrier penetration. Great bullets, but designed with a specific purpose in mind and not really for the average Joe. Critical Defense is what I have always carried in my Shield now. It is much better in short barreled guns. I regularly shoot some of my SD ammo, and i'm about out now. i hate buying 20 rd boxes. SG has Critical duty in 50 boxes, but I've never seen the Critical Defense in the bigger boxes, so i loaded up on some gold dots and Speer lawmen in 165 grain. But now check the Lucky Gunner sight and you can see the results from them testing several different rounds.

I was surprised by the 165 Gold dot performance. It failed to expand and over penetrated out of the short barrel. I had bought and practiced with the 165 grain stuff before i saw this Luckey gunner tests. The 180's did fine though. I'll carry those, or the short barrel version as soon as SG ammo gets more is stock. They have great prices, and you can get boxes of 50. The best thing about the Gold Dots, is that Speer specifically loads their Lawmen FMJ's to the match the ballistics of the Gold Dots, and their Lawmen stuff is cheap. (Some others do this as well but are more pricey). With the matching ballistics, I feel better about not shooting as much of my SD ammo. I still have a couple boxes of the 165 Gold Dots and a bunch o boxes of the Lawmen FMJ"S, but ill save them for my full size, and load up on the 180 grain stuff when SGammo gets it back in stock. Then I'll have to practice all over again.(but i like practice)
